High-Ranking ANFA Officials Arrested in Major Sports Fraud Investigation

Rohan PoudelBy Rohan Poudel

Kathmandu, Nepal – In a significant development underscoring the ongoing efforts to combat corruption and ensure integrity across various sectors, two high-ranking officials of the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) have been arrested on charges related to match-fixing, irregularities, and fraud. The arrests, carried out by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police, have sent ripples through the nation's sports community and highlight the critical need for transparency and accountability within prominent organizations.

The individuals taken into custody are Rabindra Joshi, 60, who serves as the Treasurer of ANFA, based in Pulchowk, Lalitpur Metropolitan City-3, Lalitpur. Alongside him, Sanjeev Pandey, 55, the Accounts Officer at the same association, residing in Lagankhel Thasikhel, Lalitpur Metropolitan City-5, has also been apprehended. Their arrests stem from an ongoing investigation into serious allegations of misconduct that threaten the credibility of Nepali football.

The investigation was initiated following a formal complaint filed by Basant Rijal, coupled with a directive from the National Sports Council (NSC) Principal Office in Tripureshwar, Kathmandu. The case, registered as “Nepal Government vs. Rabindra Joshi et al.,” specifically targets offenses related to match-fixing, financial irregularities, and fraudulent activities within the sports sector. The Central Investigation Bureau, known for its expertise in complex criminal investigations, has been diligently pursuing leads, culminating in these high-profile arrests.

The CIB's swift action underscores the government's commitment to rooting out corruption, even in areas traditionally perceived as less scrutinized by financial markets. While ANFA is a sports body, the involvement of its treasurer and accounts officer in alleged financial misconduct raises questions about governance, internal controls, and the ethical standards upheld by such prominent national organizations. For investors, particularly those with an interest in the broader economic and governance landscape of Nepal, such incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of robust regulatory frameworks and transparent operations across all sectors, as they can indirectly impact overall market sentiment and investor confidence.

Following their arrest, both Joshi and Pandey were presented before the Lalitpur District Court. The court has granted a four-day remand, allowing the police to conduct further intensive investigations into the allegations. This period is crucial for gathering additional evidence, questioning the suspects, and potentially identifying other individuals who may be involved in the alleged malpractices. The outcome of this investigation could have far-reaching consequences for ANFA, potentially leading to significant reforms in its administrative and financial management.

This incident comes at a time when Nepal is striving to enhance its international image and attract foreign investment. Maintaining high standards of integrity in all public and semi-public institutions, including sports federations, is paramount. The arrests signal a strong message that irregularities and fraud will not be tolerated, irrespective of the position or influence of the individuals involved. This commitment to the rule of law is a positive indicator for the overall business environment, even if the immediate news pertains to sports.

Important Market Update: Separately, for investors and market participants, it is important to note that the Nepali stock market will remain closed on Ashoj 5, Monday. This closure is typically observed for public holidays or specific market events. Investors should plan their trading activities accordingly, as no transactions will occur on this day.
