Himalayan Laghubitta Posts Robust 49% Profit Surge in Q4, But Rising NPLs Warrant Investor Attention
Himalayan Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Limited (HLBSL) has unveiled its unaudited financial results for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2082/83, showcasing a significant leap in profitability that is likely to capture the attention of investors. The microfinance institution reported a net profit of Rs. 10.66 crore, marking an impressive 49.18% increase from Rs. 7.14 crore recorded in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year. This robust growth in earnings underscores the company's operational strengths and strategic focus during the challenging economic landscape.
The surge in profitability was primarily fueled by a substantial increase in net interest income and a notable reduction in the cost of funds. HLBSL's net interest income climbed by 19.22% year-on-year, reaching Rs. 44.21 crore. Concurrently, operating profit demonstrated strong momentum, rising by 44.39% to Rs. 15.21 crore from Rs. 10.54 crore a year earlier. These figures directly translated into an improved earnings per share (EPS), which increased to Rs. 31.26 from Rs. 22.34, reflecting enhanced shareholder value.
From a balance sheet perspective, HLBSL exhibited steady growth in key areas. Loans and advances expanded by 1.37% to Rs. 4.96 billion, indicating continued outreach and lending activities within its target communities. Customer deposits also saw healthy growth, increasing by 15.15% to Rs. 1.27 billion, reflecting growing public trust and liquidity management. Furthermore, the institution reported a significant recovery in retained earnings, which soared to Rs. 9.25 crore from Rs. 3.86 crore in the previous fiscal year, demonstrating improved financial resilience. Reserves also strengthened, increasing by 23.92% to Rs. 15.36 crore.
Despite the commendable profit growth, a critical area requiring investor scrutiny is the deterioration in asset quality. The Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio rose from 7.48% to 9.04%, representing a 20.86% increase. This upward trend in NPLs indicates a higher proportion of loans that are not being repaid as scheduled, which can pose future risks to profitability and liquidity. Correspondingly, impairment charges surged by 58.97%, signaling increased provisioning against potential loan losses. This suggests that while HLBSL is growing its loan book, it is also facing headwinds in loan recovery, a common challenge in the microfinance sector, particularly during periods of economic stress.
On a more positive note, the company demonstrated improved operational efficiency by significantly reducing its cost of funds. This metric declined by 14.35% to 5.55% from 6.48%, which directly contributed to stronger interest margins and overall profitability. Moreover, the Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) showed a healthy improvement, rising from 8.54% in the previous fiscal year to 11.18% in the current quarter. This increase in CAR is a positive indicator of the institution's strengthened capital buffer, enhancing its ability to absorb potential losses and support future growth, thereby reassuring regulators and investors about its financial stability. The net worth per share also improved by 9.69% to Rs. 162.52, further reflecting the company's growing intrinsic value.
As of the end of the fourth quarter, HLBSL's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio stood at 27.82 times, based on a market price of Rs. 869.40. This valuation metric provides investors with a snapshot of how the market perceives the company's earnings potential relative to its share price. While the strong profit growth is encouraging, investors will need to carefully weigh this against the rising NPLs and the broader economic environment. HLBSL's Q4 results present a mixed bag of strong financial performance driven by operational efficiencies and capital strengthening, juxtaposed with the persistent challenge of managing asset quality in the microfinance sector. Future performance will largely depend on the company's ability to mitigate NPL risks while sustaining its growth trajectory.
