Langtang Hydropower Project: Over 25 Workers Trapped in Tunnel Amid Rasuwa Floods, Rescue Efforts Hampered

The Langtang Hydropower Project, a crucial 20-megawatt (MW) initiative currently under construction in Nepal's Rasuwa district, is facing a severe crisis as more than 25 workers are reported to be trapped within one of its tunnels. This alarming incident, believed to be a direct consequence of recent devastating floods and landslides in the region, has triggered urgent rescue efforts that are unfortunately being hampered by significant logistical and environmental challenges.

According to Vijaymohan Bhattarai, the Managing Director of the Langtang Hydropower Project and Secretary of the Independent Power Producers' Association, Nepal (IPPAN), the workers became trapped while performing their duties in a tunnel located approximately 100 meters above the river level. The precise condition of these individuals remains unknown, as all mobile communication with them has been severed since the incident. This communication blackout, coupled with the remote and rugged terrain of Rasuwa, has created a formidable barrier to assessing the situation accurately and initiating effective rescue operations.

A critical impediment to the immediate rescue is the severe shortage of helicopters. Managing Director Bhattarai confirmed that despite extensive efforts to secure aerial support for a swift extraction, no helicopters have been made available. This lack of essential equipment underscores the broader challenges faced by infrastructure projects in remote areas of Nepal, particularly during natural calamities. The project typically employs around 60 workers. While initial reports indicate that staff working in the dam area are safe, the fate of the 25 individuals in the tunnel, along with several other workers whose whereabouts are yet to be confirmed, remains a grave concern. The project management is actively working to ascertain the status of all personnel, but the combination of geographical isolation and communication breakdown continues to complicate these vital efforts.
