Miss Nepal Transforms into a Dynamic Business Incubator, Empowering Women Entrepreneurs and Professionals

Rohan PoudelBy Rohan Poudel

The Miss Nepal pageant, traditionally viewed as a celebration of beauty and grace, is undergoing a significant transformation, evolving into a powerful "business incubator" and a robust platform for women's entrepreneurship and professional development in Nepal. This shift marks a departure from its earlier perception, which sometimes drew criticism, to a modern role that actively fosters corporate networking, brand building, and social impact.

For over three decades, the Miss Nepal competition has been a prominent event in the nation's cultural calendar. While it previously faced scrutiny, often being mischaracterized, the narrative has dramatically changed in recent years. Today, it is no longer merely a stage for showcasing beauty, personality, and catwalk skills. Instead, it has become a strategic launchpad for Nepali women to establish a strong presence in the corporate sector, launch innovative startups, engage in social entrepreneurship, and pursue advanced international studies, thereby making tangible contributions to the Nepali economy. Many accomplished professionals and budding entrepreneurs now actively participate in Miss Nepal to gain public exposure and leverage the platform for their existing ventures. Notable examples include Deepmala Dhakal, the current Miss Nepal World 2026 and an established businesswoman; Dr. Ishani Shrestha, Miss Nepal 2013 and a dental specialist; and Engineer Shrinkhala Khatiwada, Miss Nepal 2018, all of whom exemplify this new breed of participant.

Analysts point to three primary factors driving this evolution from glamour to entrepreneurship:

Firstly, the Corporate Network and Brand Value generated by the pageant is immense. Miss Nepal provides participants with unparalleled direct access to top corporate houses, investors, media outlets, and regulatory bodies within the country. The high personal branding achieved by winners and even participants significantly aids them in securing investment and establishing market presence when launching new businesses. This network is invaluable for navigating the competitive business landscape.

Secondly, the "Beauty with a Purpose" Economic Framework, particularly emphasized on international stages like Miss World, inspires contestants to think beyond mere social service and delve into social entrepreneurship. This framework encourages them to develop sustainable and self-reliant business models to address challenges in remote and underserved communities, fostering a mindset of impactful innovation.

Thirdly, the Influx of Highly Educated and Professionally Backgrounded Talent has redefined the competition. In recent years, an increasing number of Miss Nepal contestants are already highly educated and possess strong professional backgrounds. For these women, the pageant is not just about the glitz and glamour; it serves as a powerful medium to amplify their knowledge, ideas, and business plans on a larger scale, using the platform as a catalyst for their intellectual and entrepreneurial aspirations.

Numerous former Miss Nepal titleholders have successfully transitioned into the business world, demonstrating the platform's efficacy as an incubator:

  • Ruby Rana Shah (Miss Nepal 1994): After a brief stint in films and modeling, she established "Ruby's Collection," a successful women's apparel store in Kupondol, actively engaging in entrepreneurship.
  • Poonam Ghimire (Miss Nepal 1996): Following her reign, she pursued higher education in the USA and returned to Nepal after 15 years to become the Director/Manager of Ambarkar Software Pvt. Ltd., showcasing a blend of international exposure and local business acumen.
  • Usha Khadgi (Miss Nepal 2000): She has carved a niche as a prominent fashion designer, running her own boutique in Kupondol, and is deeply entrenched in the fashion business.
  • Malvika Subba (Miss Nepal 2002): A versatile personality, she has worked across various media, including music videos, films, advertisements, and fashion shows, establishing herself as an influential figure and an ideal for many young women.
  • Priti Sitaula (Miss Nepal 2003): After winning the title at 22, she pursued studies in the USA and later returned to Kathmandu to establish and run her own successful business.
  • Jenisha Moktan (Miss Nepal 2009): She holds a significant corporate role as the Head of Human Resources at Integrated Mobility Solutions (IMS) Group, where she pioneered the establishment of the HR department.
  • Sadikshya Shrestha (Miss Nepal 2010): An MBA graduate from Kathmandu University, she possesses a strong command over business and management. She has invested in the commercial sector through her own event management, brand consultancy, and corporate training company, working as a brand strategist for various national and international brands.
  • Shrinkhala Khatiwada (Miss Nepal 2018): A batch topper architect from Pulchowk Campus, she holds a master's in urban development from Harvard University. She leads Gaatha, an architectural and design firm, and the social organization One Home Foundation. She provides professional consulting and construction services in sustainable urban planning, local material utilization, and architecture, spearheading technical entrepreneurship. She is also an owner of the Kathmandu Gorkhas, a franchise team in the NPL.
  • Priya Sigdel (Miss Nepal Earth 2018): She leads HattiHatti, a social enterprise that empowers marginalized and economically disadvantaged women by providing tailoring and production training, enabling them to produce sustainable fashion garments and achieve self-reliance.
  • Anushka Shrestha (Miss Nepal World 2019): With a BBA from Australian Catholic University, she worked in auditing and finance at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia for over two years before becoming Miss Nepal. In 2020, she launched "Makkuse," a handicraft and sweets brand, modernizing traditional Nepali sweets like Gundpak and Pustakari. Makkuse employs local farmers and artisans, bringing Nepali flavors to the international market. Anushka has been recognized among South Asian women entrepreneurs, ranking third in In The Cap Magazine's 2022 list of top 10 South Asian women entrepreneurs. She is also a Member of Parliament for Rastriya Swatantra Party.

The evolution of Miss Nepal into a platform that nurtures entrepreneurial spirit and professional growth underscores a broader societal shift towards empowering women beyond conventional roles. It highlights how a cultural event can be strategically leveraged to foster economic independence and contribute significantly to the nation's development, making it an intriguing case study for investors interested in social impact and human capital development.
