Nerude Mirmire Laghubitta Achieves Remarkable Turnaround with Rs. 23.59 Crore Net Profit in Q4 FY 2082/83
Nerude Mirmire Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Limited (NMLBBL) has demonstrated a significant financial resurgence, reporting a net profit of Rs. 23.59 crore for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2082/83. This impressive performance marks a substantial turnaround from the net loss of Rs. 18.25 crore recorded in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year, signaling a robust recovery and improved operational efficiency for the microfinance institution.
The dramatic shift in profitability is particularly noteworthy given the challenging economic landscape. A key factor contributing to this turnaround was the institution's ability to manage its impairment charges effectively. NMLBBL reported negative impairment charges of Rs. 14.81 crore, a stark contrast to the Rs. 94.24 crore incurred in the prior year. This reduction in provisions for potential loan losses played a pivotal role in bolstering the bottom line, reflecting either improved loan recovery efforts or a re-evaluation of asset quality. This strategic management of provisions has been instrumental in transforming a previous loss into a significant profit, highlighting a more prudent approach to risk assessment and financial health.
Despite this strong net profit, some aspects of the operating performance showed a decline. Operating profit fell by 260.67% to Rs. 32.30 crore, while net interest income, a core revenue stream for financial institutions, decreased by 10.66% year-on-year to Rs. 1.29 arba. This suggests that while the company successfully navigated its impairment challenges, there might be underlying pressures on its core lending operations or interest rate margins. Furthermore, personnel expenses saw a 13.73% increase, reaching Rs. 82.36 crore, indicating growing operational costs that warrant close monitoring by management to ensure long-term sustainability and efficiency.
On the balance sheet front, NMLBBL exhibited mixed trends. Customer deposits showed healthy growth, increasing by 19.15% to Rs. 7.69 arba, which is a positive indicator of public trust and liquidity. This growth in deposits provides a stable funding base for the institution. However, loans and advances to customers experienced a marginal decline of 0.99%, settling at Rs. 19.32 arba. This slight contraction in the loan portfolio, coupled with the dip in net interest income, suggests a cautious approach to lending or perhaps a focus on consolidating existing loans rather than aggressive expansion in the current economic climate.
A crucial highlight for NMLBBL is the significant improvement in its asset quality. The non-performing loan (NPL) ratio dramatically decreased to 19.86% from a concerning 31.64% a year earlier. This substantial reduction in NPLs is a testament to the institution's enhanced risk management practices and potentially more effective recovery mechanisms. For a microfinance institution, a lower NPL ratio is vital for sustainable growth, regulatory compliance, and investor confidence, as it directly impacts profitability and capital adequacy. Concurrently, the cost of funds also saw a marginal decline to 6.27% from 6.37%, indicating slightly better efficiency in managing funding sources.
The company's capital adequacy ratio (CAR) also strengthened, improving to 9.38% from 7.74% in the previous year. An improved CAR signifies a stronger financial buffer against potential risks and aligns with regulatory requirements, enhancing the institution's stability and capacity for future growth. Reflecting the positive bottom-line performance, earnings per share (EPS) turned positive at Rs. 16.88, a remarkable recovery from the negative Rs. 13.06 reported last year. Net worth per share also increased by 5.39% to Rs. 186.59, further solidifying shareholder value and indicating a healthier equity position.
At the close of the fourth quarter, NMLBBL's shares were trading at Rs. 534.90 per share, with a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 31.69 times. While the P/E ratio reflects investor expectations for future growth, the turnaround in profitability and improved asset quality provide a more stable foundation for potential appreciation. The institution's ability to convert a significant loss into a substantial profit, largely driven by effective impairment management and improved asset quality, positions it for a more optimistic outlook in the upcoming fiscal year. Investors will be keenly watching how NMLBBL sustains this momentum, particularly in enhancing its core operating income and managing personnel expenses, to ensure long-term profitability and consistent shareholder returns.
