RSDC Microfinance Navigates Mixed Signals: Strong Support Zone Amidst Bearish Technicals and Improved Financials

Rohan PoudelBy Rohan Poudel

The microfinance sector in Nepal has been a subject of keen investor interest, often characterized by volatility. Last week, the microfinance sub-index experienced a slight downturn, declining by 13.77 points to close at 4576.54, following a previous close of 4562.77. Within this dynamic environment, RSDC Microfinance Financial Institution Limited (RSDC) has found itself at a critical juncture, with its share price recently dropping by Rs 6 to conclude the week at Rs 632, down from Rs 638. This movement places RSDC's stock within a robust support zone, prompting a deeper dive into its technical and fundamental indicators.

Technical Analysis: A Battle Between Support and Resistance

RSDC's share price has demonstrated remarkable resilience, consistently finding strong support within the Rs 620 to Rs 640 range over an extended period. This established support zone, reinforced by a horizontal green trendline from below, has historically prevented further downward movement, suggesting a floor for the stock's valuation. However, the path ahead is not without challenges. Should the stock manage to break upwards from this consolidation, it is likely to encounter significant resistance in the Rs 755 to Rs 790 band, a level where previous rallies have stalled.

Adding to the complexity, RSDC's share price currently trades below its key moving averages—the 10-day, 25-day, 50-day, and 100-day simple moving averages. This positioning, coupled with a descending red trendline from above, exerts considerable downward pressure, hindering any immediate bullish momentum. For a definitive bullish trend to emerge, the stock would need to decisively close above Rs 665, signaling a potential shift in investor sentiment and a break from the current bearish undertones.

Volume Dynamics and Bearish Crossovers

Despite the technical headwinds, an interesting development in RSDC's trading volume offers a glimmer of optimism. The daily trading volume has recently fallen below its 20-day average. This "volume dryout" while the price hovers around a strong support zone can be interpreted as a positive sign. It often indicates that selling pressure is diminishing, and shareholders are reluctant to offload their shares at lower prices, suggesting a potential accumulation phase or a stabilization before a possible rebound.

However, this positive volume signal is juxtaposed against a recent bearish crossover observed towards the end of last week. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) line has crossed below its signal line, and the MACD histogram has entered the negative territory. This classic technical signal typically suggests that the stock's short-term momentum is weakening and could portend further price declines in the immediate future. The Stochastic RSI, on the other hand, is currently in the neutral zone, indicating a balance between buying and selling pressure, which might reflect the conflicting signals from other indicators.

Financial Health: A Mixed Bag of Growth and Contraction

From a fundamental perspective, RSDC Microfinance has reported a commendable financial performance for the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year (assuming FY 2080/81, correcting the likely typo in the original article). The company posted a net profit of Rs 138.2 million, marking a substantial 33.96% increase compared to Rs 103.1 million in the same period of the previous fiscal year. This impressive profit surge, however, was primarily driven by a significant reversal of Rs 55.8 million in potential loan loss provisions, rather than organic growth in core operations.

Indeed, the company's net interest income saw a contraction, falling to Rs 191.5 million from Rs 224.5 million in the preceding fiscal year. This decline is attributed to a reduction in net loan disbursements, highlighting challenges in expanding its lending portfolio. Despite this, RSDC has managed to improve its operational efficiency. The cost of funds decreased notably to 4.87% from 6.17%, and the base rate also dropped from 6.96% to 5.53%. These reductions are crucial for microfinance institutions as they enable the company to offer more competitive wholesale loans to its partner microfinance institutions, potentially stimulating future loan growth.

Asset quality, a critical metric for microfinance, shows a slight deterioration with the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio increasing marginally to 3.92% from 3.34%. Nevertheless, the net NPL remains contained at 0.36%, and a robust provision coverage of 116.70% indicates that RSDC is well-prepared to mitigate potential credit risks, maintaining a strong position in managing its loan portfolio.

Valuation and Market Sentiment

As of the last fiscal year-end, RSDC's distributable profit stood at Rs 114.1 million, translating to a distributable Earnings Per Share (EPS) of Rs 11.04. The overall EPS increased by Rs 3.52 to Rs 13.37, reflecting the improved profitability. The book value per share is Rs 137.26. Based on the last trading price, the company's Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratio is 47.27 times, and its Price-to-Book (P/B) ratio is 4.82 times. These valuation multiples are important for investors to compare RSDC against its peers in the microfinance sector and the broader market.

With 10,340,644.20 units of shares listed on NEPSE, RSDC Microfinance commands a total market capitalization of Rs 6.535 billion. The stock's 180-day average price is Rs 667.64, with a 52-week high of Rs 763 and a low of Rs 578.70, illustrating its recent trading range. Broker activity last week showed Broker No. 65 as the top buyer with 2,436 units, while Broker No. 58 was the top seller with 2,451 units, indicating active trading interest.

However, the "Fear & Greed Meter" currently places RSDC's share in the "Fear Zone," suggesting that investors harbor concerns about potential future price declines. This sentiment, combined with the mixed technical and fundamental signals, underscores the need for investors to conduct thorough due diligence. While the strong support zone and improved financials offer a degree of stability, the bearish technical crossovers and declining net interest income warrant careful consideration. Investors should monitor the stock's ability to hold its support, break resistance, and observe future financial reports for sustained growth in core operations.
