Bhote Koshi Flood Crisis: Over 600 Tourists and Tourism Personnel Missing, NATTA Initiates Urgent Data Collection

Nepal's vibrant tourism sector, a cornerstone of its economy, faces a severe setback following the devastating floods in the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa district. The Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA) has issued an urgent circular, revealing an alarming situation where a significant number of tourists and tourism professionals have gone missing. This catastrophic event, which occurred on Bhadra 10 (August 26) at approximately 8:30 AM, has inflicted unprecedented damage on the region and raised serious concerns across the industry.

According to preliminary reports from the Nepal Tourism Board, a total of 384 travelers who were on tours organized by various travel agencies are currently unaccounted for in the affected areas. This figure includes 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali tourists, underscoring the international dimension of this tragedy. Expanding on these initial findings, NATTA has reported that the total number of individuals associated with the tourism sector who are now missing stands at a staggering 644. This includes not only tourists but also guides, porters, and other support staff vital to the industry.

The impact is widespread, affecting numerous travel agencies. Specific companies have reported substantial numbers of missing clients: Leaf Holiday accounts for 55 individuals, Himalayan Glacier for 52, Kailash Journey for 31, Fishtail Tour & Travels for 27, and Alpine Eco Trek for 20. Other agencies also grappling with missing persons include Kathmandu Holiday Tour (17), Richa Tour (12), Samrat Tour (9), Trekkers Society (9), Explore Vacation (7), Worldwide Travel (2), and Rosha Travels (1). These figures paint a grim picture of the immediate human cost and the operational challenges now confronting these businesses.

In response to this unfolding crisis, NATTA General Secretary Raj Kumar Devkota has urged all member companies to promptly submit detailed information regarding any missing tourists, employees, vehicles, or physical damage sustained due to the floods. This critical data can be submitted through the NATTA secretariat or a dedicated Google Form. The association has committed to leveraging this information to coordinate swiftly with relevant security agencies, the Nepal Tourism Board, and local administrations. The primary objective is to expedite search and rescue operations and provide necessary facilitation to those affected, ensuring a unified and effective response.
