Energy Minister Shrestha Embarks on Critical Koshi Province Tour to Assess Power and Irrigation Infrastructure
Nepal's Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, has commenced a crucial three-day inspection tour of Koshi Province. The visit, which began today with the minister's departure for Biratnagar, the provincial capital, aims to conduct a comprehensive on-site assessment of the region's existing electricity and irrigation infrastructure. This strategic initiative underscores the government's commitment to addressing fundamental challenges in these vital sectors and formulating robust strategies for their improvement.
Minister Shrestha is leading a high-level delegation comprising key officials from various relevant government bodies. The team includes Sarita Dawadi, Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation; Mohan Kumar Shakya, Joint Secretary; Sudarshan Shrestha, the Minister's Private Secretary; and Devesh Belbasel, a member of the secretariat. Further bolstering the expertise on the ground are Dr. Maheshwar Shrestha, Director General of the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation; Dinesh Bhatta, Deputy Director General; and Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha, Acting Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), alongside other senior officials. The composition of this delegation highlights the multi-faceted approach being taken to tackle the complex issues surrounding energy and water management in the province.
The primary objective of the tour is to gain firsthand insights into the prevailing electricity problems, the condition of transmission lines, and other critical power infrastructure in eastern Nepal. Simultaneously, the team will meticulously observe the state of irrigation access and the condition of canals, which are indispensable for agricultural productivity in the region. These on-site evaluations are expected to provide a clear picture of the current situation, enabling the formulation of targeted and effective improvement strategies.
During the three-day itinerary, the delegation is scheduled to visit several key sites. These include the 400 kV Bhokraha substation in Inaruwa and the Kerauna substation, both pivotal components of the national power grid. Furthermore, the team will conduct site visits to the Barahkshetra Chatahara canal and, significantly, the historic Chandra Canal. The inspection of the Chandra Canal, a legacy irrigation project, holds particular importance, symbolizing Nepal's long-standing efforts in water resource management and the need for its continued modernization and maintenance.
This visit to Koshi Province is not an isolated event but rather part of a broader, nationwide initiative by Minister Shrestha. He has previously undertaken similar inspection tours to Sudurpaschim, Karnali, and Lumbini provinces, directly engaging with local communities and stakeholders to understand their specific challenges. This systematic approach demonstrates a concerted effort to develop a holistic understanding of Nepal's energy and irrigation landscape, paving the way for integrated national development plans.
For investors, particularly those in the hydropower, agriculture, and infrastructure development sectors, such governmental focus on critical infrastructure is a positive signal. Improved reliability of power supply and enhanced irrigation facilities can significantly de-risk investments and open new avenues for growth. The government's proactive stance in identifying and addressing these issues is crucial for fostering a stable and conducive environment for economic development and attracting further investment into Nepal's burgeoning energy and agricultural sectors. The long-term economic benefits of a robust energy and irrigation infrastructure, including increased agricultural output, industrial growth, and improved living standards, are substantial, making these ministerial tours vital for the nation's progress.
