Karnali Province Accelerates Towards Full Electrification: 74% Connected to National Grid Amidst Infrastructure Boom

Nepal's Karnali Province, a region historically challenged by its rugged topography and remote settlements, is making significant strides towards achieving universal electricity access. Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha recently underscored the government's unwavering commitment to transforming Karnali into a fully electrified province, characterized by reliable and high-quality power supply. Addressing queries from Members of Parliament in the National Assembly regarding the province's electrification status, Minister Shrestha articulated a comprehensive strategy that leverages both the national grid and alternative energy solutions in parallel to overcome geographical hurdles and ensure complete electrification.

Currently, a remarkable 74.30% of Karnali's population has gained access to electricity through the national transmission line. This substantial progress is a testament to the intensified infrastructure development efforts across the province. For areas where extending the national grid remains a formidable challenge, the government is actively deploying alternative energy sources such as micro-hydro projects, solar mini-grids, and household solar systems, ensuring that no community is left behind in the pursuit of energy access. This dual-pronged approach is critical for a region like Karnali, where conventional grid expansion can be prohibitively expensive and technically complex, often requiring innovative solutions to reach isolated pockets.

Further illustrating the rapid pace of development, Minister Shrestha presented data from the 2079 'Last Mile Electrification Plan.' Out of 101,187 households identified under this ambitious initiative, only approximately 10,000 households are yet to be connected to the electricity network. This indicates that the vast majority of previously unserved homes are now enjoying the benefits of modern energy. The government's vision, however, extends beyond mere connectivity. "Our goal is not just to deliver electricity, but to ensure reliable, high-quality, and sustainable electricity services to every citizen's home," Minister Shrestha emphasized, highlighting a commitment to service excellence and long-term energy security. The province's electrical infrastructure has witnessed considerable advancements in recent times. The 132 kV Surkhet substation is now fully operational, significantly bolstering the region's power distribution capacity and stability. Furthermore, the construction of the Surkhet-Dailekh transmission line and the Chupra substation in Dailekh are in their final stages, poised to expand the grid's reach even further into previously underserved districts. Other critical projects, including the Dailekh-Kalikot-Jumla 132 kV transmission line, are actively progressing through various phases of construction and planning. These large-scale infrastructure investments are pivotal in integrating Karnali more deeply into the national energy framework, facilitating greater energy stability, attracting investment, and promoting broader economic integration.

Recognizing the unique challenges posed by remote and geographically isolated areas, the government has adopted a pragmatic policy of ensuring energy access through alternative means where national grid extension is not immediately feasible. "Geographical remoteness and distance should not be a reason for citizens to be deprived of their right to electricity," Minister Shrestha stated, reiterating the government's commitment to equitable access. "Where the grid is possible, we will expand it, and where it is not, we will bring light through alternative energy."
