Nepal Establishes Robust Monitoring Mechanism for National Pride Irrigation Projects, Aiming for Timely Completion and Enhanced Accountability

Nepal has initiated a significant step towards enhancing the efficiency and accountability of its crucial national pride irrigation projects. The Department of Water Resources and Irrigation (DWRI) has established a specialized monitoring mechanism designed to meticulously track the physical and financial progress of these vital infrastructure developments, along with other projects under its purview. This move comes as a direct response to long-standing challenges that have plagued these ambitious undertakings, including persistent delays, cost overruns, and difficulties in timely problem resolution during construction phases.

The newly implemented mechanism aims to provide a robust framework for oversight, ensuring that these projects, which are fundamental to Nepal's agricultural backbone and overall economic development, are completed within their stipulated timelines, budgets, and quality standards. Through this system, the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation (MoEWRI), in conjunction with the DWRI, will conduct regular and stringent monitoring. This will encompass on-site progress assessments, detailed evaluations of physical and financial health, adherence to construction schedules, identification of major bottlenecks, and a thorough review of corrective actions taken.

Initially, the monitoring efforts will prioritize six pivotal national pride projects under the department's jurisdiction. These include the Mahakali (Third) Irrigation Project, Rani Jamara Kulariya Irrigation Project, Babai Irrigation Project, Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project, Sikta Irrigation Project, and Sunkoshi-Marin Diversion Multipurpose Project. Each of these projects holds immense strategic importance for Nepal, promising to significantly boost agricultural productivity, enhance water resource management, and contribute to energy generation, thereby uplifting rural economies and ensuring food security. For instance, the Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project is critical for inter-basin water transfer, aiming to irrigate vast tracts of land in the Banke and Bardiya districts while also generating hydropower.
