Nepal Intensifies Crackdown on Online Betting and Illegal Financial Transactions, Blocking Over 223,000 Platforms

In a significant move to safeguard its digital economy and financial integrity, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has announced the blocking of over 223,000 websites and applications involved in online betting and other illicit financial activities. The initiative is rooted in the government's 'One Hundred Action Items for Governance Reform,' a comprehensive agenda issued on March 27th. The NTA, as the primary regulatory body, has been instrumental in implementing this directive, successfully blocking a total of 223,568 illegal platforms to date.

The urgency of this crackdown gained momentum following concerns raised by the Prime Minister's Office, particularly noting a surge in the use of betting applications, especially since the FIFA World Cup. This heightened awareness prompted the NTA to accelerate its enforcement efforts, leading to the formation of a dedicated 'Task Force' to spearhead the operation. Engineer Omprakash Mahato, an Assistant Director at the NTA and a key member of the Task Force, confirmed that the blocking process involves close collaboration with Internet Service Providers (ISPs), who are actively working with the authority to block the URLs of identified illegal sites.

Despite the significant progress, the NTA acknowledges a persistent challenge: the rapid emergence of new illegal websites under different names as soon as existing ones are blocked. To counter this, the authority is employing advanced 'threat intelligence tools' and has deployed skilled personnel for continuous monitoring and 'hunting' of these evolving threats.
