Government Launches Major Crackdown on Cooking Gas Black Marketing Amidst Artificial Scarcity

The Nepalese government has initiated a stringent monitoring and enforcement campaign to combat the artificial scarcity and black marketing of cooking gas, a critical household commodity. This decisive action comes in response to growing consumer complaints about unscrupulous groups creating a false shortage and exploiting consumers by selling gas at inflated prices, despite a consistent supply from India.

In a coordinated effort between the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies, plainclothes police officers have been deployed across gas depots and sales centers within the Kathmandu Valley. These officers are operating undercover, posing as regular customers to identify and apprehend individuals or entities involved in hoarding, creating artificial shortages, or selling gas above the government-stipulated prices.

The move was prompted by serious concerns raised by Industry Minister Gauri Yadav. Minister Yadav expressed strong disapproval of the artificial crisis, stating that such actions, which cause undue hardship to the public despite a smooth supply chain, would not be tolerated. She directly appealed to Home Minister Sudan Gurung for immediate intervention and market surveillance to address the issue.

Responding to both the minister's directive and widespread public grievances, the police force was mobilized into action starting Sunday morning. The undercover operations are specifically targeting depots and retailers who are found to be stockpiling gas, turning away consumers with empty cylinders under the pretext of unavailability, or engaging in price gouging. The government has made it clear that any such malpractices will result in severe legal consequences.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a stern warning, indicating that any depot or seller found to be engaging in illicit activities will be immediately taken into custody, and the strictest possible legal action will be pursued. This robust enforcement aims to restore market integrity and ensure fair access to essential goods for all citizens.

Furthermore, the government plans to assess the effectiveness of this monitoring campaign in the Kathmandu Valley. Based on the outcomes, similar plainclothes police operations may be extended to other districts across the country to stabilize the market and curb black marketing nationwide. This proactive approach underscores the government's commitment to consumer protection and market regulation.

In light of the normal supply situation, the Ministry has urged consumers not to panic and to refrain from unnecessary hoarding, which can inadvertently contribute to perceived shortages. The public is also encouraged to promptly report any instances of black marketing or price irregularities to the local administration, empowering citizens to play an active role in maintaining market transparency and fairness.
