Prime Minister Directs Establishment of Domestic Organic Certification System, Boosts Organic Agriculture Sector

In a significant move poised to revolutionize Nepal's agricultural landscape, Prime Minister Balendra Shah has issued a directive to relevant government bodies to establish a robust system for organic agricultural product certification within the country. This initiative aims to alleviate the substantial financial burden currently faced by Nepali organic farmers who rely on expensive international certification processes.

The directive came following a crucial meeting at Singha Durbar with officials from the 'Organic Association Nepal'. During the discussion, the association highlighted the exorbitant costs associated with obtaining international organic certification, which often acts as a significant barrier for local producers seeking to access global markets. They strongly advocated for the establishment of an internationally recognized certification agency within Nepal, operating under government oversight, to make the process more accessible and affordable for farmers. Further demonstrating the government's commitment, the association also requested the reinstatement of a 75% subsidy previously provided by the government for international organic certification, which had been discontinued. Prime Minister Shah responded positively to this plea, indicating that the subsidy would be reactivated until a fully operational, international-standard certification agency is established domestically. This financial relief is expected to provide immediate support to organic farmers and exporters, enabling them to maintain their market presence while the long-term infrastructure is developed. Additionally, the Prime Minister was informed that the relevant ministry is actively working on developing a legal framework to address and resolve the issue of export subsidies for organic products, which have been halted for the past two years.

Beyond certification, Prime Minister Shah underscored the government's broader commitment to sustainable agricultural practices. He announced that necessary steps would be taken to control the unregulated use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, thereby actively promoting organic farming across the nation. To further bolster this sector, he directed relevant authorities to provide support grants to private industries and cooperative organizations engaged in the production of organic fertilizers. Crucially, he also mandated that organic fertilizers should receive the same facilities and incentives currently extended to chemical fertilizers, leveling the playing field and encouraging a shift towards more environmentally friendly farming methods.
