Tragic Flash Flood Claims Lives of Mother and Daughter in Pokhara

Pokhara, Nepal – A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Pokhara's bustling market area this past weekend, as a sudden and powerful flash flood, triggered by intense evening rainfall, tragically claimed the lives of a young mother and her two-year-old daughter. The devastating event, which occurred on Friday evening (Bhadra 12), has cast a pall of grief over the popular tourist city and highlighted the severe risks posed by monsoon-induced natural calamities.

The victims have been identified as 26-year-old Sushma Dahal and her two-year-old daughter, Ranika, residents of Dhungepatan, Pokhara-30. According to Chitrangat Baral, Assistant Chief District Officer of Kaski, the tragedy struck at Harkachok, near the Janapriya Campus in Pokhara Metropolitan City-17, a busy intersection frequented by commuters and pedestrians.

Eyewitness accounts and police reports indicate that the family was navigating the city's streets amidst the heavy downpour. Sushma Dahal, her daughter Ranika, and her husband, Kamal Dahal, were traveling on a scooter from Birauta towards Prithvi Chowk. As the intensity of the rain increased, the streets quickly transformed into raging torrents, with flash floods (locally known as 'bhel') rapidly accumulating. Sensing the danger, Kamal Dahal prudently stopped the scooter at Harkachok. However, in a moment of unimaginable misfortune, as they were dismounting, the powerful current swept little Ranika away, pulling her into a roadside drain.

In a desperate and heroic attempt to save her child, Sushma Dahal immediately plunged into the swirling waters after her daughter. The relentless force of the flood, however, proved overwhelming, dragging both mother and daughter approximately two kilometers downstream to the Birauta area. The harrowing scene unfolded rapidly, leaving Kamal Dahal in a state of shock and despair as he witnessed his family being carried away by the unforgiving waters.

Upon Kamal Dahal's frantic calls for help, local residents and law enforcement agencies swiftly mobilized for a rescue operation. The search efforts culminated in the discovery of Sushma and Ranika in an unconscious state within a canal at Birauta, Pokhara-17. They were immediately rushed to Gandaki Medical College for urgent medical attention. Despite the valiant efforts of medical personnel, Sushma Dahal succumbed to her injuries on Friday night. Her daughter, Ranika, tragically passed away the following morning, Saturday (Bhadra 13), leaving the community in profound sorrow.
