The NAIMA Mobility Expo, which commenced in Kathmandu, has injected a significant wave of excitement and innovation into Nepal's automotive sector. The inaugural day of the expo witnessed a fierce competition among leading automobile companies to unveil their latest brands and models, with a pronounced emphasis on electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid technologies. This strategic pivot reflects a global trend towards environmental sustainability and advanced technological integration, now firmly taking root in the Nepali market.

Chinese automotive giant BYD, a strong contender in Nepal's EV segment, seized the opportunity at the NAIMA Mobility Expo to launch three new models simultaneously. Simec Inc., BYD's official distributor, introduced new editions of the Atto 1, Atto 2, and Atto 3, meticulously designed to cater to diverse Nepali customer preferences and budgets. The Atto 1, presented in a facelifted version, targets urban commuters and those seeking an entry-level EV. Its Dynamic variant, equipped with a 30.08 kWh battery, offers an impressive range of approximately 230 kilometers on a single full charge. Enhancements in this facelift include a refreshed design, wireless charging, and a 360-degree camera, elevating the user experience. Pricing for the Atto 1 Dynamic model is set at NPR 3,075,000, while the Premium model is available for NPR 3,480,000.

Furthermore, BYD unveiled a new base variant of the Atto 2 at the expo. Featuring a 45 kWh battery capacity, this model is positioned as an excellent option for customers seeking a compact electric SUV at a more accessible price point. Previously, the Atto 2 was only available in Nepal with a 59.13 kWh battery. The new Essential variant is priced at NPR 4,595,000, with the Premium variant at NPR 4,811,000. Not stopping there, BYD also introduced a facelifted version of its popular Atto 3, boasting significant improvements in design, charging systems, and other technical aspects. The Advanced model is priced at NPR 6,210,000, and the Superior model at NPR 7,800,000, showcasing BYD's commitment to continuous innovation.

Another Chinese automotive brand, BAIC, made a significant entry into the Nepali market through the NAIMA Mobility Expo with the launch of its advanced hybrid SUV, the 'BJ30,' priced at NPR 11,996,000. The BJ30 stands out with its distinctive 'boxy' off-road design, seamlessly blending rugged aesthetics with modern electric technology. Its core feature is a sophisticated hybrid powertrain that combines a petrol engine with an electric motor, promising significantly reduced fuel consumption compared to traditional petrol SUVs and enhanced driving comfort. The BJ30 is loaded with features such as LED lighting, a substantial 215mm ground clearance, and a panoramic sunroof. Inside, it offers a spacious cabin, a digital instrument cluster, and a large infotainment screen. Safety is paramount, with a 540-degree camera (providing an under-car view) and over 20 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features. Additionally, it boasts a 70-liter 'frunk' space, adding practical utility.

Chery, another prominent Chinese automaker, also introduced its new 'Q3' model under the 'Q-Q' brand at the NAIMA Expo. This electric urban crossover, designed for modern city lifestyles, has garnered considerable attention for its appealing aesthetics and impressive range. Equipped with a 41.2 kWh battery, the Q3 claims a range of up to 400 kilometers on a single charge. The Comfort variant is priced at NPR 3,099,000, and the Premium variant at NPR 3,299,000 (with MRPs of NPR 3,449,000 and NPR 3,599,000 respectively). Key features include a 540-degree camera, 175mm ground clearance, and a large 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Chery Q3 has already received international acclaim, including the 2025 'Red Dot Design Award' and the 2026 'IF Design Award,' underscoring its world-class design and innovation.

Japanese brands also made their mark. Nissan, through its official distributor Pioneer Motocorp Pvt. Ltd., launched its new SUV 'Tecton' at the expo, priced at NPR 5,129,000. With its modern and bold SUV styling, large body, and next-generation design language, the Tecton is expected to strengthen Nissan's product portfolio in Nepal. Similarly, the globally renowned Toyota unveiled two powerful new models. Toyota introduced a new avatar of its popular pickup, the 'Hilux,' priced at NPR 15,500,000, and the 'RAV4 Hybrid EV,' a hybrid technology-based vehicle, at NPR 20,130,000. These premium and reliable Toyota models offer new compelling options for discerning customers.

The NAIMA Mobility Expo has undeniably opened new avenues for technology and competition in the Nepali automobile market. The aggressive presence of Chinese brands like BAIC, BYD, and Chery in the EV and hybrid segments is expected to stimulate new capital mobilization and provide Nepali consumers with access to modern vehicles at competitive prices. The increasing adoption of hybrid technology is poised to significantly reduce fuel consumption, while advanced safety features and contemporary designs will further refine the standard of vehicles on Nepali roads. Industry stakeholders are optimistic that this expo will have a positive ripple effect on the Nepali automobile market and the broader economy, marking it as a crucial milestone for the development of Nepal's auto sector. This shift not only caters to evolving consumer preferences but also aligns with national goals of reducing reliance on fossil fuel imports and promoting sustainable transportation solutions.
