NEPSE Concludes Week with Modest Decline Amidst Surging Transaction Volume: A Detailed Sectoral Analysis

Rohan PoudelBy Rohan Poudel

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) concluded the trading week with a modest decline, as the benchmark index shed 0.95%, or 25.11 points, to settle at 2618.72. This marks a slight retreat from the previous week's closing of 2643.83 points. Out of the five trading days, the market experienced negative movements on four occasions, with only one day witnessing positive gains, reflecting a cautious sentiment among investors throughout the week.

Beyond the headline index, other key market indicators also registered declines. The Float Index, which tracks the performance of freely traded shares, decreased by 3.37 points. Similarly, the Sensitive Index, representing the performance of 'A' class companies, fell by 2.00 points, and the Sensitive Float Index saw a reduction of 1.21 points. These movements collectively underscore a broad-based downward pressure across various segments of the market.

Interestingly, despite the dip in the NEPSE index, the market witnessed a significant surge in transaction volume. The daily average turnover for the week climbed to NPR 4.49 billion, a substantial 16.30% increase compared to the NPR 3.86 billion recorded in the preceding week. This paradox of a falling index coupled with rising transaction volume suggests active trading, potentially driven by a mix of profit-taking at higher levels and bargain hunting by investors looking to capitalize on lower prices. Furthermore, the daily average number of shares traded increased by 14.19%, and the average number of transactions rose by 10.08%, reinforcing the notion of heightened market activity.

The overall market capitalization also mirrored the index's decline, shrinking by approximately 1%. From NPR 4.547 trillion at the close of the previous week, the total market wealth decreased by NPR 43 billion, settling at NPR 4.504 trillion. This reduction reflects the erosion of investor wealth in line with the broader market correction.

A deeper dive into sectoral performance reveals a mixed bag. Out of the thirteen sub-indices, only two managed to close in the green, while the remaining eleven registered losses. The Trading sub-index emerged as a notable gainer, advancing by 0.41% or 13.29 points, to reach 3253.15 points. The Manufacturing and Processing sub-index also posted a marginal gain of 0.11%. These sectors might have benefited from specific company news or increased investor interest in their underlying fundamentals.

Conversely, the Finance sub-index experienced the steepest percentage decline, falling by 2.37% or 56.21 points, to close at 2318.68. This significant drop could be attributed to ongoing concerns regarding interest rates or liquidity within the financial sector. In terms of absolute points, the Life Insurance sub-index suffered the largest hit, shedding 210.41 points to end the week at 11593.42, indicating a substantial correction in this high-value sector.

The week also saw the listing of 3,689,681.11 units of shares from three different companies on NEPSE. This included bonus shares from Salt Trading Corporation and Sanima GIC, alongside right shares from United Ajod Insurance. Such listings typically increase the supply of shares in the market, which can influence price dynamics.

Individual stock performances presented a stark contrast. Sarbottam Paints emerged as the week's top gainer, skyrocketing by an astonishing 101.06% to close at NPR 797.06, up from NPR 396.70. Mount Everest Power Development also saw impressive gains, rising by over 69%. These sharp increases often point to speculative interest or significant positive company-specific news. On the flip side, Khanikhola Hydropower Company recorded the steepest decline, plummeting by 23.39%, while ICFSC's debentures also saw a 14% reduction in value, highlighting the inherent risks in certain investments.

An analysis of trading activity through popular buy and sell lists offers insights into investor preferences. Nepal Telecom, Sarbottam Paints, and Laxmi Sunrise Bank were among the most actively bought stocks, suggesting sustained investor confidence or speculative interest in these counters. Conversely, Modi Energy, Swarojgar Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha, and Manakamana Engineering Hydropower were frequently sold, possibly indicating profit-taking or a shift in investor sentiment away from these particular stocks.

In conclusion, the past week on NEPSE was characterized by a moderate index decline, yet paradoxically, a robust increase in trading activity. While most sectors faced downward pressure, a few managed to buck the trend. The heightened transaction volume amidst a falling market suggests a dynamic environment where investors are actively re-evaluating their positions, seeking both opportunities and managing risks. Investors will be closely watching macroeconomic indicators and corporate announcements in the coming days to gauge the market's next direction.
