NEPSE Continues Downtrend as Market Witnesses Decline in Index and Trading Volume
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) continued its bearish trajectory on Tuesday, marking the third consecutive trading day of decline. The benchmark NEPSE index shed 19.34 points, closing at 2622.48, signaling a persistent downturn in investor sentiment. This broader market weakness was echoed across other key indices, with the Sensitive Index dropping by 2.55 points, the Float Index by 1.30 points, and the Sensitive Float Index by 0.88 points, indicating a widespread impact across large-cap, freely traded, and sensitive freely traded stocks respectively.
Accompanying the index's fall was a noticeable contraction in trading activity. The total turnover for the day amounted to NPR 5.07 billion, a decrease from the NPR 5.52 billion recorded on Monday. This decline in trading volume, observed across 55,246 transactions involving 15.19 million units of 347 stocks, suggests a waning investor confidence and a reluctance to engage actively in the market. A falling index coupled with reduced volume often indicates that sellers are in control, and there's a lack of strong buying interest to absorb the selling pressure, potentially prolonging the bearish phase. Such a trend typically prompts investors to adopt a cautious stance, re-evaluating their portfolios and seeking out more defensive assets or opportunities.
Despite the overall market gloom, a few individual stocks managed to defy the trend, hitting the positive circuit level. Sarbottam Paints saw its share price surge by NPR 68.40, closing at NPR 524.60, while Mount Everest Power Development also experienced a significant gain, rising by NPR 78.60 to settle at NPR 603.20. These instances highlight that even in a declining market, specific companies, often driven by unique corporate news, strong fundamentals, or speculative interest, can attract significant buying. Conversely, Sagarmatha Hydropower Company faced the steepest decline among traded stocks, plummeting by 10.63%, reflecting the inherent volatility and risk associated with the hydropower sector, which often sees sharp movements based on project updates, regulatory changes, or investor sentiment shifts.
Interestingly, in terms of trading volume, the 9-year Agricultural Bond emerged as the top performer, recording transactions worth NPR 506.8 million. This unusual prominence of a bond in a stock market report could suggest institutional interest seeking safer havens amidst equity market uncertainty or specific block deals. Following the bond, Solu Hydropower and Khani Khola Hydropower Company also witnessed substantial trading, with turnovers exceeding NPR 390 million and NPR 250 million respectively, indicating continued investor focus on the energy sector, despite its inherent risks and the broader market's downturn.
A sectoral analysis further underscored the market's broad-based weakness. Out of the 13 sub-indices, a staggering 12 closed in the red. The Manufacturing and Processing sub-index bore the brunt of the selling pressure, registering the largest decline of 1.40%. This widespread decline across sectors indicates that the market correction is not isolated but rather a systemic response to prevailing economic conditions, liquidity concerns, or investor apprehension. The only exception was the Trading sub-index, which managed a marginal gain, providing a small glimmer of resilience in an otherwise challenging market.
Amidst the prevailing market downturn, some companies continue to deliver positive corporate news. Himalayan Distillery Limited (HDL) recently published its unaudited financial statement for the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year. The report indicates a commendable increase in the company's net profit compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. Such positive corporate performance from established companies like HDL can offer investors a beacon of stability and potential long-term value, even when the broader market faces headwinds. This highlights the importance for investors to conduct thorough due diligence and focus on company-specific fundamentals rather than solely relying on general market trends. The current market scenario calls for cautious optimism and a strategic approach to investment, emphasizing quality stocks with robust financial health and promising growth prospects.
