NEPSE Dips Below 2600, Tests Crucial Psychological Support Amidst Declining Turnover

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) experienced a challenging start to the trading week, with the benchmark index testing the crucial psychological support level of 2600 points on Monday. While the index briefly dipped below this significant threshold during intraday trading, it managed to close remarkably close to it, signaling a battle between bearish pressures and underlying support.

On Monday, the NEPSE index concluded the trading session at 2599.58, marking a decline of 19.13 points from the previous close. This drop pushed the index just below the 2600 mark, a level closely watched by investors and technical analysts alike for its psychological significance. The Sensitive Index, which tracks the performance of 'A' class companies, also saw a decrease of 3.17 points. Broader market indicators like the Float Index and Sensitive Float Index followed suit, declining by 1.34 points and 1.11 points, respectively, indicating a widespread negative sentiment across the market.

Accompanying the index's decline was a noticeable reduction in trading turnover, suggesting a cautious approach from investors. The market recorded transactions worth NPR 3.2397 billion on Monday, a significant drop compared to the NPR 4.16 billion turnover observed last Friday. This reduced liquidity was spread across 8.572 million units of shares from 350 stocks, executed in 53,153 transactions. A lower turnover during a market correction often implies a lack of strong buying interest, which can exacerbate downward trends and reflect a 'wait-and-see' attitude among market participants.

Despite the overall bearish market, a few stocks managed to defy the trend. Sarbottam Paints continued its remarkable run, hitting the positive circuit level for the eighth consecutive trading day. The company's share price surged by NPR 119.60, closing at NPR 917.20. This consistent upward movement suggests strong investor confidence or speculative interest in the company, possibly driven by specific corporate news or market rumors. Similarly, microfinance institutions like Dhaulagiri Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha and CYC Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha also witnessed significant gains, with their share prices rising by approximately 12% and over 9%, respectively. These isolated pockets of strength often indicate sector-specific news, strong earnings expectations, or renewed investor interest in particular segments.

Conversely, Panchakanya Mai Hydropower experienced the steepest decline among traded stocks, with its share price plummeting by 9.83%. This highlights the volatility inherent in certain sectors, particularly hydropower, which can be susceptible to various factors including regulatory changes, project delays, or fluctuating energy prices.

In terms of trading volume, Reliance Spinning Mills emerged as the top performer, recording transactions worth NPR 127.2 million. Solu Hydropower followed closely with approximately NPR 120 million in share transactions, while Sahas Urja's turnover exceeded NPR 105 million. High turnover in these stocks could indicate active trading interest, either from buyers accumulating positions or sellers offloading shares, often driven by news or technical trading strategies.

A comprehensive look at the sectoral performance reveals a broad-based decline, with all 13 sub-indices closing in the red. The Hydropower sub-index bore the brunt of the selling pressure, registering the largest drop of 1.19%. The Non-Life Insurance sub-index also saw a significant decrease of over 1%, while the remaining sub-indices experienced more modest declines of less than 1%. This widespread weakness across sectors underscores the prevailing cautious sentiment in the market, possibly influenced by macroeconomic factors, liquidity concerns, or a general wait-and-see approach from investors.

The breach of the 2600 psychological support level, even if temporary, is a significant event for NEPSE. Investors will now be closely watching for signs of a rebound or a further dip, which could dictate the market's direction in the coming days. Factors such as interest rate movements, upcoming corporate earnings reports, and broader economic indicators will play a crucial role in shaping investor sentiment and market performance. The market's ability to firmly reclaim and hold above the 2600 level will be a key indicator for a potential stabilization or reversal of the current downtrend.
