NEPSE Index Retreats Marginally, But Robust Trading Volume Signals Underlying Activity

Rohan PoudelBy Rohan Poudel

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index concluded the week's final trading day with a marginal decline, breaking a three-day streak of modest gains. On Friday, the benchmark NEPSE index shed 7.37 points, or approximately 0.28%, to settle at 2643.83. This slight retreat suggests a period of consolidation or profit-taking after recent upward movements, as investors recalibrate their positions.

Despite the dip in the main index, the market witnessed a notable surge in trading volume, indicating sustained investor interest and activity. The total turnover for the day reached an impressive NPR 4.27 billion (approximately USD 32.1 million), a significant increase from the NPR 3.72 billion recorded on the previous trading day. This substantial volume was generated from the exchange of 9.754 million shares across 43,060 transactions involving 344 different stocks. Such an increase in turnover, even on a down day, often suggests that investors are actively rebalancing portfolios, with some taking profits while others see opportunities to enter or increase positions, potentially signaling underlying strength or a shift in market sentiment.

A closer look at the sub-indices reveals a mixed performance. While the overall NEPSE index declined, the Sensitive Index, which tracks the performance of 'A' class companies, managed a slight gain of 0.13 points. Conversely, the Float Index and Sensitive Float Index, which represent freely traded shares and 'A' class freely traded shares respectively, both experienced minor declines of 0.40 points and 0.19 points. This divergence indicates that larger, more established companies might be holding their ground better than the broader market or smaller-cap stocks, possibly due to their perceived stability or recent positive corporate developments.

Sectoral performance on Friday was predominantly negative, with nine out of the thirteen sub-groups closing in the red. The Trading sub-group was the hardest hit, registering the largest decline of 2.57%. This could be attributed to profit booking after recent rallies or specific concerns within the sector. On the brighter side, four sub-groups managed to post gains: Life Insurance, Microfinance, Mutual Fund, and Others. These sectors saw modest increases, suggesting continued investor confidence or specific positive catalysts driving demand in these areas.

Among individual stocks, Mount Everest Power Development and Sarbottam Paints were notable performers, both hitting the positive circuit level, indicating strong buying interest and potentially positive company-specific news or sectorial tailwinds. First Microfinance Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha and Vikas Hydropower Company also saw significant appreciation, with their share prices climbing by approximately 7%. On the losing end, Super Khudi Hydro Power experienced the steepest decline, with its share price plummeting by 12.83%, which could be due to profit-taking or negative news specific to the company or the broader hydropower sector.

In terms of turnover, the Agricultural Bond (9 years) dominated the market, recording a substantial turnover of NPR 708.79 million. This highlights the continued appeal of fixed-income instruments, possibly for institutional investors seeking stable returns amidst market volatility. Among equities, Khani Khola Hydropower Company and Liberty Energy Company also saw robust trading activity, with turnovers of approximately NPR 180 million and NPR 165 million respectively, underscoring sustained investor focus on the hydropower sector, which often attracts significant capital in the Nepalese market.

Adding to the day's corporate news, Kumari Bank Limited released its unaudited financial statement for the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year. The bank reported a net profit of approximately NPR 7.5 billion for the period. Such earnings reports from major financial institutions are closely watched by investors as they provide insights into the health of the banking sector and the broader economy, often influencing investor sentiment towards financial stocks.

The day's trading activity paints a picture of a market in flux. While the headline index saw a minor correction, the robust trading volume suggests that underlying market dynamics remain active, with investors actively participating in both buying and selling. This mixed signal indicates a cautious yet engaged market as participants navigate various economic indicators and corporate earnings reports, seeking opportunities amidst the prevailing conditions.
