The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) continued its positive trajectory on Thursday, marking a third consecutive day of gains, albeit modest. The benchmark index, along with overall market turnover, saw an encouraging increase, signaling sustained investor confidence and a healthy appetite for equities within the Nepali market.
The NEPSE index advanced by 8.81 points, closing at 2651.21. This incremental rise, following two prior positive sessions, suggests a gradual but firm upward momentum. Complementing this, the Sensitive Index, which tracks large and liquid companies, also rose by 0.97 points, reflecting positive sentiment among blue-chip stocks. The Float Index and Sensitive Float Index, which reflect the performance of actively traded shares and large-cap actively traded shares respectively, also registered gains of 0.60 points and 0.36 points. These movements indicate a broad-based positive sentiment across different segments of the market, suggesting that the rally is not confined to just a few select stocks.
A significant highlight of the day was the increase in market turnover. The total value of shares traded reached an impressive NPR 3.72 billion, a notable jump from Wednesday's NPR 3.53 billion. This robust trading activity involved 10.225 million units of shares across 347 stocks, executed through 45,822 transactions. Increased turnover often signifies greater liquidity and investor participation, which are healthy indicators for market depth and efficiency. A higher turnover suggests that more investors are actively engaging in buying and selling, potentially driven by positive news, corporate earnings, or an optimistic economic outlook.
The day saw exceptional performance from several companies. Sarbottam Paints and Mount Everest Power Development both hit the positive circuit breaker, indicating strong buying interest and limited selling pressure. This could be attributed to specific company news, sectorial tailwinds, or speculative interest. Additionally, Super Khudi Hydropower witnessed a remarkable 13% surge in its share price, while Ghalemdi Hydroelectric Company also posted a significant gain of approximately 12%. These strong performances in the hydropower sector suggest renewed investor focus on energy stocks, possibly driven by favorable regulatory environments, upcoming project developments, or expectations of higher dividends. Conversely, Emerging Nepal saw its share price decline by 5.11%, highlighting the inherent volatility and risk associated with certain market segments and the importance of due diligence for investors.
In terms of trading volume, Ghalemdi Hydroelectric Company led the pack, recording a substantial turnover of NPR 299.8 million. This high volume, coupled with its significant price appreciation, underscores strong investor engagement and liquidity in the stock. NRN Infrastructure & Development also saw considerable activity, with transactions exceeding NPR 165 million, while Solu Hydropower's turnover surpassed NPR 155 million. These figures indicate active trading in infrastructure and hydropower companies, sectors often favored by long-term investors and those seeking growth opportunities in Nepal's developing economy.
The market's positive breadth was evident in the performance of its sub-indices. Out of 13 sub-groups, 10 registered gains, while only two saw declines. Key sectors like Banking, Development Bank, Finance, Hotels & Tourism, Hydropower, Life Insurance, Manufacturing & Processing, Microfinance, Non-Life Insurance, and Others all experienced slight increases. This widespread positive movement across diverse sectors suggests a broad-based recovery or sustained optimism rather than a concentrated rally in just a few segments. The Trading sub-index remained stable, indicating a neutral performance for companies primarily involved in trading activities.
Amidst the overall market movements, Kumari Bank Limited also released its unaudited financial statements for the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year. The bank reported a net profit of approximately NPR 7.5 billion for the period. Such corporate earnings reports are crucial for investors, providing insights into the financial health and performance of individual companies, which can significantly influence investment decisions, particularly within the banking sector, a cornerstone of the NEPSE market.
Thursday's trading session reinforced the positive sentiment observed in the NEPSE market over the past few days. The combination of an increasing index, higher turnover, and broad-based sectoral gains paints an optimistic picture for investors. While specific companies showed exceptional performance, the overall market trend suggests a healthy appetite for equities, driven by various factors including corporate earnings and sector-specific developments. Investors will be keenly watching for continued momentum and further corporate announcements in the coming days, as the market navigates its path forward.
