NEPSE Rebounds Modestly, Transaction Volume Sees Uptick After Four-Day Slump
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index concluded the week on a positive note, registering a modest gain after enduring a four-day losing streak. This slight recovery offered a glimmer of hope to investors following a period of sustained market correction. On Friday, the NEPSE index climbed by 12.96 points, settling at 2685.54. This upward movement was mirrored across other key indices, with the Sensitive Index advancing by 2.44 points, the Float Index by 1.00 point, and the Sensitive Float Index by 0.97 points, indicating a broad-based, albeit cautious, improvement in market sentiment.
Accompanying the index's rebound was a notable increase in transaction volume, a crucial indicator of market liquidity and investor participation. The market witnessed a total turnover of NPR 3.75 billion, a significant rise from the NPR 3.38 billion recorded on the previous trading day, Thursday. This volume was generated from the trading of 8.85 million shares across 337 stocks in 46,752 transactions. The uptick in trading activity suggests renewed interest from investors, potentially indicating a belief that the market may have found a temporary floor after its recent declines. Such an increase in volume during an upward movement is often interpreted as a healthy sign, lending credibility to the day's gains.
Individual stock performances provided further insights into market dynamics. Everest Color Limited continued its impressive run, hitting the positive circuit level once again. Its share price surged by NPR 170.70, closing at NPR 1,309.30. This consistent performance highlights strong investor confidence in the company, possibly driven by recent positive news or strong fundamentals. Similarly, Laxmi Value Fund 2 saw its unit price jump by 8%, while Joshi Hydropower Development Company's shares appreciated by nearly 7%. These gains suggest specific pockets of strength within the market, particularly in certain investment funds and the hydropower sector, which often attract attention due to Nepal's energy potential.
Conversely, not all stocks participated in the day's rally. Bottlers Nepal (Terai) experienced the steepest decline, with its share price falling by 5.33%. Such a significant drop for a prominent company warrants closer examination by investors, as it could signal specific company-related concerns or a broader shift in investor preference away from certain established blue-chip stocks.
In terms of transaction volume, Ridi Power Company emerged as the leader, with shares worth NPR 172.6 million changing hands. This high volume indicates strong trading interest and liquidity in the stock. Global IME Bank also saw substantial activity, with its transaction volume exceeding NPR 150 million, closely followed by Central Finance, which recorded approximately NPR 150 million in share turnover. These figures underscore the continued dominance of financial institutions and energy companies in driving market activity on NEPSE.
A sectoral analysis revealed a predominantly positive trend, with 11 out of 13 sub-indices closing in the green. This broad-based recovery suggests that the positive sentiment was not confined to just a few sectors but was spread across the market. However, the Non-Life Insurance and Trading sub-indices bucked the trend, closing lower. This divergence could be attributed to specific challenges or profit-taking activities within these sectors, warranting a deeper dive for investors focused on these areas. The overall market sentiment, while still cautious, appears to be absorbing the recent corrections, with investors potentially looking for value opportunities after the previous downturn. The coming days will be crucial in determining if this modest rebound marks a sustained recovery or merely a temporary pause in the broader market trend.
