Nepal Rastra Bank Mandates National ID for Digital Wallets, Bolstering Financial Security

In a significant move to enhance the security and integrity of its digital payment ecosystem, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the central bank of Nepal, has issued a revised directive making the National Identity Card (National ID) mandatory for all digital wallet users. This new regulation, part of an amendment to the integrated directive concerning payment systems, aims to strengthen Know Your Customer (KYC) compliance and combat financial crimes such as money laundering and terrorist financing. The central bank's Payment System Department has set a firm deadline of Ashoj 2083 (mid-October 2026) for all existing digital wallet users to update their accounts with their National ID details. For new users, the National ID will be a prerequisite for opening a digital wallet account. This directive applies to popular digital payment platforms like eSewa and Khalti, which have become integral to daily financial transactions across Nepal. The NRB's decision underscores a broader commitment to formalizing the digital economy and aligning with international best practices for financial oversight. By mandating a robust identification system, the central bank seeks to create a more transparent and accountable digital financial landscape, which is crucial for fostering investor confidence and ensuring the long-term stability of the payment infrastructure. While the directive emphasizes strict compliance, the NRB has introduced a degree of flexibility for Nepali citizens residing abroad. These individuals will be permitted to open digital wallet accounts online using other valid identification documents, without immediate requirement of a National ID number. However, this exemption comes with a crucial condition: upon their return to Nepal, they must update their National ID details in their respective digital wallets within 35 days. This provision acknowledges the practical challenges faced by non-resident Nepalis while ensuring eventual compliance with domestic regulations. The implementation of this directive is expected to have several implications for various stakeholders. Digital wallet providers will need to undertake significant operational adjustments, including system upgrades to integrate National ID verification processes and extensive public awareness campaigns to educate their user base. While there might be initial challenges and potential temporary churn as users adapt to the new requirements, the long-term benefits of a more secure and compliant platform are substantial. Enhanced security can lead to increased user trust, reduced fraud incidents, and a more reliable environment for digital transactions. For users, the mandate, though requiring an initial effort, promises a safer digital payment experience. A robust identity verification system can protect users from identity theft and unauthorized transactions, ultimately fostering greater confidence in digital financial services. From a regulatory perspective, the NRB will gain better oversight and more accurate data, enabling more informed policy-making and effective monitoring of financial flows. However, challenges remain. The success of this initiative will largely depend on the penetration and accessibility of National ID registration across the country. Ensuring that all citizens, especially those in remote areas, have easy access to obtain their National ID will be critical to prevent financial exclusion. The central bank and digital payment companies will need to collaborate closely with government agencies responsible for National ID issuance to streamline the process and minimize inconvenience for the public. In conclusion, the Nepal Rastra Bank's directive to make National ID mandatory for digital wallets marks a pivotal step in strengthening Nepal's digital financial infrastructure. It reflects a strategic balance between promoting digital innovation and ensuring robust regulatory oversight, ultimately aiming to build a more secure, transparent, and resilient digital economy for all stakeholders.

Prime Minister Prachanda Warns of Ideological Drift and 'Social Media Opium' Threatening Nepal's Sovereignty

In a significant and candid address, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) recently articulated a critical self-assessment of Nepal's communist movement, warning that a failure to instill continuous ideological schooling in the younger generation has led to its weakening. Speaking at a seminar in Kathmandu on 'The Role of Leftist Parties in the Current Political Situation,' held on the occasion of Pushpalal Memorial Day, the Prime Minister highlighted a concerning shift in focus among communist forces. Prime Minister Prachanda observed that the preoccupation with government formation and intricate power-sharing strategies has inadvertently eroded the ideological bedrock of the communist movement. This internal focus, he argued, has created a vacuum that external forces are exploiting. He expressed deep concern that foreign powers have been systematically strategizing to mislead the nation and its populace for an extended period, and the collective failure to recognize these machinations in a timely manner has propelled Nepal towards a precarious geopolitical crisis. Drawing a stark historical parallel, the Prime Minister invoked the infamous Opium Wars, recalling how imperialist powers strategically weakened the Chinese people through widespread opium addiction to facilitate the seizure of their valuable resources. He contended that a similar, albeit modernized, phenomenon is unfolding in contemporary Nepali politics. Prachanda asserted that by capitalizing on the ideological and strategic weaknesses of both leftist and democratic forces, the Nepali people are now being subjected to a new form of 'opium' – one dispensed through the pervasive influence of social media. In his direct remarks, Prime Minister Prachanda stated, "We erred by prioritizing minor, day-to-day reforms, focusing on forming government coalitions, appointing prime ministers based on those alliances, and securing electoral victories at local and provincial levels. In essence, we communists made a mistake. We neglected the crucial task of continuously imparting ideological education to our youth. Meanwhile, our adversaries – the adversaries of the Nepali nation and its people – diligently pursued their own strategies. These adversaries, with plans spanning two decades, sought to 'correct' communists in Nepal and mislead our citizens." He further elaborated, "The fundamental issue is that we somehow strayed from our primary duty: to remain perpetually vigilant in defending Nepal's national sovereignty, to continuously build and acquire power, to engage consistently with the populace, and to keep them mobilized. That is where our weakness lies." He continued, "In the history of the Chinese revolution, imperialists pondered how to plunder the Chinese people and seize their resources. They achieved this by addicting the people to opium. Once the general populace was intoxicated, the concept of national sovereignty became irrelevant, allowing imperialists to effortlessly claim China's resources. This time, due to our oversight and our inability to provide consistent ideological schooling, they have exploited our vulnerability and fed 'opium' to the Nepali people. I do not intend to insult our citizens. What kind of opium? Algorithmic manipulation through social media. Everyone has been intoxicated by this 'opium.' Now, we too must wage an 'opium war.' There is no other recourse." Prime Minister Prachanda underscored the urgent need for communist forces to launch a robust ideological campaign. This campaign, he emphasized, must serve as a counter-narrative to the 'algorithmic manipulation' prevalent on social media platforms, which he believes is unduly influencing the new generation. Furthermore, he reiterated that any aspirations for lasting leftist unity would remain elusive without first ensuring its long-term sustainability and ideological coherence. These statements from the head of government signal a potential recalibration of political priorities, emphasizing national sovereignty and ideological resilience, which could have significant implications for Nepal's long-term economic stability and policy direction, crucial factors for investor confidence.

Nepal Deports 47 Foreign Nationals in Crackdown on Immoral Activities and Financial Crime

Kathmandu, Nepal – In a significant move to uphold public order and combat illicit activities, Nepali authorities have deported 47 foreign nationals involved in immoral activities within the country's prominent tourist hubs. The Kathmandu District Police Range announced this decisive action at a press conference on Friday, underscoring the government's commitment to maintaining a safe and ethical environment for both locals and visitors. Superintendent of Police (SP) Pawan Kumar Bhattarai of the Kathmandu District Police Range detailed the operation, explaining that a special crackdown was initiated in popular tourist areas such as Thamel and Durbarmarg. These areas, renowned for their vibrant nightlife and cultural attractions, had unfortunately become hotspots for various illicit practices. The police operation led to the apprehension of 57 foreign women suspected of engaging in immoral activities. Following thorough investigations, 47 of these individuals were subsequently deported through the Department of Immigration to their respective home countries, including Uganda, Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh, Kenya, and Indonesia. Investigations are still ongoing for the remaining ten individuals. SP Bhattarai highlighted that these foreign nationals were found to be operating with a misconception that Nepal offered a lenient environment for such activities, coupled with perceived opportunities for cheap living and a thriving nightlife. This perception, if left unaddressed, could severely tarnish Nepal's image as a family-friendly tourist destination and undermine the efforts to promote sustainable tourism. The swift action taken by the police sends a clear message that Nepal will not tolerate activities that compromise its social fabric and legal framework. Beyond the immediate issue of immoral activities, the press conference also shed light on a more insidious threat: the proliferation of organized networks facilitating online betting and illicit financial transactions. SP Bhattarai revealed that these sophisticated networks are actively involved in operating online betting platforms, which are used to channel substantial amounts of Nepali money out of the country through illegal means such as Hundi and cryptocurrency transfers. This poses a significant challenge to Nepal's financial stability and regulatory oversight, contributing to capital flight and undermining the formal banking system. The authorities have intensified their efforts to identify individuals and groups involved in these financial crimes. This includes rigorous monitoring of betting websites and a thorough investigation into their financial dealings. The crackdown on such organized crime is crucial for safeguarding the national economy, preventing money laundering, and ensuring that financial resources are utilized for productive investments within Nepal. Investors, both domestic and international, often look for countries with robust legal frameworks and effective enforcement against financial irregularities, making these actions vital for maintaining confidence in Nepal's economic environment. Furthermore, SP Bhattarai also provided an update on a broader campaign against intermediaries who obstruct public service delivery. In this ongoing initiative, the police have arrested 309 individuals, with legal action already initiated against 61 of them. This multi-pronged approach by law enforcement agencies demonstrates a comprehensive strategy to tackle various forms of illegality, from social misconduct to financial malpractices and bureaucratic hurdles. Such concerted efforts are essential for fostering a transparent, accountable, and law-abiding society, which in turn creates a more predictable and secure environment for businesses and investments. The government's proactive stance in addressing these issues reflects a commitment to good governance and the long-term prosperity of the nation.

India's 'Cockroach Janata Party' Movement: A Digital Uprising Challenging Governance and Youth Discontent

India, a nation no stranger to mass movements, is currently witnessing an unprecedented youth uprising that has rapidly evolved from a social media satire into a formidable challenge to the Narendra Modi government. Dubbed the "Cockroach Janata Party" (CJP) movement, this phenomenon stands apart from traditional political protests, having been born not from established parties or veteran politicians, but from the collective frustration of millions of young Indians. The movement's genesis is rooted in a controversial statement made by a Supreme Court judge, who reportedly compared unemployed youth to "cockroaches." This remark ignited a spark, leading youth communication strategist Abhijeet Dipke to post a satirical question on social media: "What if all cockroaches unite?" This seemingly innocuous query quickly resonated across digital platforms, transforming into a powerful symbol of resistance. Millions of young people on Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube began to reclaim the derogatory term, declaring themselves "cockroaches" with a clear message: if the establishment demeans us, we will turn that very word into a banner of defiance. What began as a satirical online campaign has, within weeks, morphed into one of the most significant youth movements in India's recent history. International media outlets have highlighted it as one of the biggest challenges to Prime Minister Modi's third term. The CJP movement has successfully disrupted parliamentary proceedings, united disparate opposition parties on a common agenda, compelled the central government to engage in formal dialogue with the protesters, and thrust the critical issue of education system reform into the national spotlight. The underlying grievances fueling this widespread discontent are profound and long-standing. For years, allegations of repeated question paper leaks in highly competitive examinations—including those for medical, engineering, and government service admissions—have plagued India's education system. These leaks have jeopardized the futures of millions of students, with the 2026 national medical entrance exam leak alone reportedly affecting nearly two million aspirants. Consequently, the CJP movement quickly transcended its initial focus on exam irregularities, evolving into a broader critique of the entire governance system. The youth's demands expanded beyond merely calling for the Education Minister's resignation; they now encompass calls for greater transparency, increased employment opportunities, enhanced governmental accountability, and comprehensive institutional reforms. This broadened scope has allowed the movement to garner support from a diverse cross-section of society, including the middle class, concerned parents, educators, and civil society organizations. The Modi government, known for its firm stance against previous national movements such as the farmer protests and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) demonstrations, finds itself in an unusually defensive position. Unlike past movements, the CJP directly taps into the frustrations of India's largest and most digitally active demographic: its youth. Protesters have pointed to recent "Gen Z revolts" in neighboring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh as precedents, signaling their intent to escalate their movement if their demands are not met. The mounting pressure has forced Prime Minister Modi to publicly commit to stringent action against those involved in paper leaks, initiate legal reforms, and engage in formal negotiations with the protesters. However, the CJP leadership, represented by spokespersons Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka, remains steadfast in its demands for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation and fundamental systemic changes, rejecting any compromise. The movement has also created a visible schism within India's cultural and public spheres. A significant segment of artists, activists, and public figures has openly supported the CJP, viewing it as a legitimate exercise of democratic rights. International solidarity has emerged, with Hollywood actors expressing public support, and environmental activists undertaking hunger strikes to lend moral weight to the cause. Prominent opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, have also aligned themselves with the protesters. Conversely, the movement has faced criticism regarding its style, satirical language, and perceived political motivations. Some critics argue that it has become more of a political campaign than a genuine student movement, while others question the necessity of intervention from foreign celebrities. The unprecedented spread of both support and opposition across social media platforms underscores the deepening ideological polarization within Indian society. Notably, even staunch past supporters of the Modi government and celebrities who previously claimed political neutrality, such as Salman Khan, Huma Qureshi, and Alia Bhatt, have publicly endorsed the CJP, with Huma Qureshi even participating in demonstrations. The most profound achievement of the Cockroach Janata Party movement, irrespective of its ultimate success in achieving specific demands, lies in its ability to elevate the deep-seated dissatisfaction of Indian youth to the forefront of national political discourse. It serves as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of social media in contemporary India, demonstrating how a digitally born campaign can rapidly escalate into a nationwide movement within a matter of weeks. While the long-term efficacy of the CJP movement remains to be seen, one undeniable message has been sent to the Indian political establishment: ignoring the aspirations and frustrations of the digital generation is no longer a viable political strategy. This movement underscores a critical shift in the political landscape, where youth voices, amplified by digital connectivity, are demanding accountability and systemic change with unprecedented force.

NEPSE at a Crossroads: Industry Expert Outlines Path to Qualitative Transformation and Sustainable Growth

Nepal's stock market, NEPSE, currently hovers around the 2700-point mark, a level that might seem familiar to seasoned investors. However, beneath the surface of the index, the market is undergoing a profound internal shift, actively seeking a qualitative transformation rather than mere numerical fluctuations. This sentiment is particularly strong given the presence of a stable government that has demonstrated a positive outlook towards the capital market. In an exclusive interview, Yuvraj Bhusal, CEO of Sunrise Securities (Broker No. 100), offered a comprehensive perspective that transcends the daily index movements, focusing instead on the market's structural evolution and future trajectory. Bhusal highlighted a significant change in investor confidence compared to previous periods when the index was at similar levels. He attributes this renewed optimism to the formation of a stable, two-thirds majority government, which has explicitly prioritized the capital market, with the Prime Minister himself showing keen interest. This political stability has fostered a more robust and mature investment environment. Bhusal argues that for the market to achieve sustainable growth, the focus must shift from merely managing supply to actively creating demand. He draws parallels with past market booms: the 1800-point rally was aided by dematerialization, which streamlined supply, while the 3200-point surge was fueled by the widespread adoption of online Trading Management Systems (TMS), boosting demand. For the current phase, Bhusal proposes a multi-pronged strategy to stimulate demand: Firstly, the full implementation of margin lending could inject an estimated NPR 100 billion into the market, significantly enhancing liquidity and investment capacity. Secondly, activating major institutional investors such as the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Citizen Investment Trust (CIT), and other social security funds is crucial. Their long-term investment horizons can provide much-needed stability and depth to the market. Thirdly, and perhaps most critically, is the long-awaited entry of foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs). Bhusal acknowledges that policy instability has historically deterred these investors, but with the current government's strong mandate, he believes the time is ripe for action. He dismisses fears of capital flight, asserting that investors are driven by profit and will invest where opportunities and clear exit policies exist. Resolving tax ambiguities and establishing transparent exit mechanisms are paramount to attracting substantial foreign capital within the next 12-18 months. Countering the often-heard narrative of the capital market as mere 'speculation,' Bhusal passionately articulates its vital role in national economic development. He cites the hydropower sector as a prime example: the end of 18-hour load shedding was facilitated by the capital market, which provided an exit mechanism for promoters to reinvest in new projects. He advocates extending this successful model to other productive sectors like manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, and IT. By enabling companies in these areas to list and raise capital, the capital market can directly contribute to GDP growth and alleviate challenges in other sectors like real estate and banking. Bhusal also addresses pressing market anomalies and proposes reforms. He highlights the significant challenge posed by unregulated pre-IPO trading, often conducted through informal channels like WhatsApp groups. This practice not only leads to substantial revenue loss for the government but also exposes investors to immense risks, as companies are traded at inflated valuations without guarantees of future IPOs. He suggests bringing this activity within the regulated system, for instance, by mandating TMS transactions for any trading above par value. The Nepali market, according to Bhusal, is also ready and in need of mechanisms like share buybacks and stock splits. Buybacks allow companies with surplus cash to repurchase their own undervalued shares, thereby creating demand and stabilizing prices. Stock splits, conversely, enhance market liquidity and make expensive shares more accessible to a broader base of small investors. Furthermore, Bhusal advocates for the abolition of the locking period, which restricts the tradability of promoter shares for a certain duration. He argues that allowing all shares to be tradable from day one would prevent artificial scarcity and manipulation, ensuring that share prices reflect true market dynamics rather than being influenced by controlled supply before large investors offload their holdings. As a bank-subsidiary broker, Sunrise Securities is focused on evolving beyond mere transaction facilitation. Bhusal emphasizes a commitment to corporate governance, compliance, knowledge sharing, and corporate advisory services. He believes brokers must educate and provide sound advice to investors, preparing for services like margin lending once regulatory clarity is achieved. Finally, Bhusal offers crucial advice to retail investors: avoid making investment decisions based on social media rumors, Facebook live sessions, or WhatsApp group tips. He urges investors to conduct thorough due diligence, examining fundamental metrics such as book value, earnings per share (EPS), and dividend history. While the market is in a positive phase, he stresses that study and patience remain the hallmarks of successful, long-term investors. The renewed optimism among business leaders, evident after recent meetings with the Prime Minister, further underscores the positive momentum and the government's commitment to fostering a vibrant economic environment.

ICAN, established under the Nepal Chartered Accountants Act, 1997, plays a pivotal role as Nepal's sole regulatory body for chartered accountants. Its mandate includes regulating CAs and registered auditors, setting professional standards, and conducting examinations, training, and continuous professional development programs. The new leadership's vision for enhanced credibility, digital advancement, and professional growth is expected to significantly bolster the accounting profession's contribution to Nepal's economic development and financial market integrity, offering a positive outlook for investors seeking transparency and accountability in the corporate sector.

Adani Enterprises Dispels Airline Entry Rumors, Reaffirms Focus on Core Infrastructure and Diversified Growth

Adani Enterprises, a flagship entity of the sprawling Adani Group, has decisively quashed recent media reports and market speculation suggesting its imminent foray into the airline business. In a regulatory filing issued on Friday, the company explicitly stated that it is “not evaluating any proposal to enter the airline business,” firmly refuting claims of an expansion into commercial aviation. This clear denial aims to provide certainty amidst a flurry of rumors that had captured significant market attention, particularly given the group's extensive presence in India's aviation infrastructure. The speculation had gained traction following reports that the Adani Group was actively exploring potential changes to existing regulations. These regulations currently impose a strict limit, prohibiting operators of major airports like Delhi and Mumbai from holding more than a 10 percent stake in any scheduled airline. Given Adani's substantial and growing footprint in India's airport sector, such regulatory discussions naturally fueled conjectures about the group's broader ambitions in aviation. However, the company's categorical denial leaves no room for ambiguity regarding its immediate plans to launch an airline, directing investor focus back to its established and announced strategic initiatives. Despite ruling out direct airline operations, it is crucial for investors to understand that the Adani Group maintains a formidable and expanding presence within India's aviation ecosystem. Through Adani Airports, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, the conglomerate has become a pivotal player, operating eight key airports across India. These include strategically important hubs such as Mumbai, Jaipur, and Thiruvananthapuram, among others. The group initially entered India's airport sector in 2019 and has since rapidly consolidated its position, demonstrating a clear commitment to developing world-class airport infrastructure and enhancing passenger experience. Beyond direct airport management, Adani Airports recently unveiled ambitious plans to invest over $2 billion in commercial developments linked to six of its operated airports across India. These projects are designed to create comprehensive business hubs around the airports, encompassing a diverse range of facilities including hotels, retail outlets, and extensive office complexes. This strategy underscores the group's vision to monetize and enhance the value of its airport assets by fostering vibrant commercial ecosystems, thereby generating multiple revenue streams beyond traditional airport services and positioning these airports as economic engines. The Adani Group's strategic diversification extends far beyond aviation. The conglomerate is a dominant force in India's infrastructure landscape, with significant interests in roads, real estate, and, most notably, ports. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) stands as India’s largest private port operator by cargo volume, managing an impressive portfolio of 15 ports across the country. This includes the highly critical Mundra Port in Gujarat, which holds the distinction of being India's busiest private port, playing a vital role in India's international trade. Furthermore, the group is making substantial inroads into the technology and digital infrastructure sectors. In May, Adani partnered with ride-hailing giant Uber to establish the latter's first data center in India, a move that highlights Adani's growing capabilities in digital infrastructure. This collaboration follows an earlier announcement in February, where the Adani Group committed to an colossal investment of $100 billion by 2035. This significant capital outlay is earmarked for developing state-of-the-art, AI-ready data centers, which are planned to be powered predominantly by renewable energy sources. This initiative is a testament to the group's broader strategy to expand its presence in cutting-edge technology while actively contributing to India's burgeoning artificial intelligence ecosystem and its clean energy transition goals. In conclusion, Adani Enterprises' clear denial regarding airline entry plans provides valuable clarity to the market. While the group will not be launching an airline, its strategic focus remains firmly on expanding and enhancing its core infrastructure businesses, particularly in airport operations and related commercial developments, ports, and the rapidly growing digital infrastructure and AI sectors. This multi-faceted approach, backed by substantial investments, positions the Adani Group for continued diversified growth and solidifies its role as a key driver of India's economic and infrastructural development. Investors can now assess the company's trajectory with a clearer understanding of its strategic priorities and long-term vision.

NEPSE Experiences 'Black Friday' with Unprecedented 1000-Point Plunge, Raising Concerns Over Technical Integrity and Investor Confidence

The Nepali stock market experienced an unprecedented "Black Friday" as the NEPSE index plummeted by a staggering 1000.93 points in a single trading session, closing at 1717.79. This historic decline, marking one of the most significant single-day losses in the Nepal Stock Exchange's history, has sent shockwaves through the investment community and raised serious questions about the market's technical resilience and regulatory oversight. The sheer magnitude of the fall, which represents approximately a 37% drop from the previous day's close, has left investors bewildered and concerned. This dramatic plunge occurred despite claims by regulatory bodies that a new circuit breaker system, designed to halt trading at 5% and 8% declines, was actively in place. The failure of these mechanisms to prevent such an extreme downturn, far exceeding the stipulated limits, has become a central point of contention and criticism among market participants. Investors are rightly questioning how the index could fall by such a substantial margin when safeguards are supposedly in effect to prevent excessive volatility. This incident has severely exposed critical technical weaknesses within the NEPSE trading infrastructure. The inability of the circuit breakers to function as intended, or to be effectively triggered, points to potential flaws in the system's design or implementation. Further compounding these concerns, the NEPSE website reportedly displayed an "under maintenance" message during this crucial period of market turmoil. Such an occurrence during a major market crash not only hinders transparency but also prevents investors from accessing vital real-time information, thereby exacerbating panic and uncertainty. The lack of immediate, reliable information during a crisis can lead to irrational decision-making and further destabilize the market. Beyond the numerical decline, this event represents a significant blow to investor confidence in the Nepali capital market. Trust is the bedrock of any financial market, and when systems designed to protect investors fail so spectacularly, it inevitably erodes faith in the market's fairness, stability, and regulatory competence. Both domestic and potential foreign investors will likely view this incident with apprehension, potentially leading to reduced participation and capital outflow in the short to medium term. The perception of a market that is technically vulnerable and inadequately regulated can deter new investments, which are crucial for the growth and development of Nepal's economy. This "Black Friday" necessitates an immediate and thorough investigation by the Nepal Stock Exchange and its regulatory bodies. There is an urgent need to identify the precise reasons for the circuit breaker system's failure, address any underlying technical vulnerabilities, and implement robust solutions to prevent a recurrence. Transparency in reporting the findings of such an investigation and outlining corrective measures will be paramount in restoring investor confidence. Furthermore, regulators must reassess the efficacy of existing market mechanisms and consider enhancements to ensure the stability and integrity of the Nepali capital market. The long-term health and growth of NEPSE depend on its ability to provide a secure, transparent, and well-regulated trading environment for all participants. The incident serves as a stark reminder that robust technical infrastructure and vigilant regulatory oversight are not merely optional but essential pillars for a thriving stock exchange.

Prime Minister Pledges Legislative Reforms to Boost Nepal's Pashmina Industry and Foster Self-Reliance

Nepal's esteemed Pashmina industry, a significant contributor to the nation's economy and cultural heritage, recently received a major boost following a high-level meeting between the Nepal Pashmina Industry Association and the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister has expressed a strong commitment to addressing the sector's long-standing challenges, even pledging to amend existing laws to facilitate its growth and enhance national self-reliance in raw materials. This proactive stance has significantly energized the private sector, signaling a potential turning point for one of Nepal's most iconic export industries. Held at Singha Durbar, the meeting saw the Association's delegation, led by President Dhan Prasad Lamichhane, present a comprehensive overview of both immediate and long-term issues plaguing the Pashmina sector. The Prime Minister reportedly showed keen interest in the private sector's concerns, issuing immediate directives to relevant government bodies through his secretariat. This hands-on approach, as noted by Lamichhane, stands in stark contrast to previous engagements, fostering a renewed sense of optimism among industry stakeholders. The delegation, comprising five representatives, left the meeting highly encouraged by the Prime Minister's direct and action-oriented style, observing that his secretariat staff meticulously noted every suggestion and that he made immediate phone calls to relevant agencies during the discussion to address issues. The immediate concerns highlighted by the Association included various technical hurdles related to taxation, customs procedures, accurate measurement of wastage (jarti), and general export bottlenecks. These issues often create inefficiencies, increase operational costs, and hinder the smooth flow of Pashmina products to international markets. The Prime Minister's prompt attention to these points, including direct calls to relevant officials during the meeting, underscored a commitment to swift resolution. Such administrative streamlining is crucial for improving the competitiveness of Nepali Pashmina on the global stage, allowing it to better compete with international counterparts. Beyond the immediate fixes, the discussion delved into a more ambitious long-term vision: leveraging Nepal's vast natural resources for raw material self-sufficiency. The Association proposed the strategic utilization of approximately 3.3 million hectares of pasture and grazing land, particularly in the Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, which account for about 80% of these lands. These extensive lands, currently underutilized, hold immense potential for producing raw materials not only for Pashmina but also for other traditional industries like carpets, felt, and allo. However, a significant legal impediment was identified: the existing Forest Act, primarily conservation-oriented, restricts the construction of essential infrastructure such as sheds and other facilities in these areas, despite them being primarily grasslands rather than dense forests. This legislative bottleneck prevents the industry from fully harnessing the country's natural endowments, thereby limiting its growth potential and perpetuating reliance on imported raw materials. In response to these challenges, the Prime Minister expressed profound interest, particularly in the long-term strategy for raw material independence. He acknowledged the critical role of the Pashmina sector in making Nepal self-reliant and assured the delegation of the government's full support. Crucially, the Prime Minister stated, “We are prepared to amend laws if necessary to implement this. The government is committed to making the country self-reliant in raw materials and empowering this sector. So, rest assured, we will move forward with the necessary work.” This commitment to legislative reform, a significant policy shift, has been met with considerable enthusiasm by the private sector, who see it as a genuine intent to remove systemic barriers to growth and foster a more conducive business environment. To achieve raw material self-sufficiency, the Association presented a detailed plan envisioning the establishment of collection centers in every ward and municipality, complemented by processing centers in each province. This decentralized approach aims to create an efficient supply chain, ensuring that raw materials are collected, processed, and made available to industries across the country, thereby reducing reliance on imports and boosting local economies, particularly in remote areas. The Prime Minister showed serious interest in these proposals and requested detailed information on legal hurdles and specific acts causing obstructions, indicating a thorough approach to problem-solving. The meeting concluded with a palpable sense of optimism. The Prime Minister's direct, action-oriented style and his readiness to address deep-rooted issues, including legislative amendments, have instilled confidence within the private sector. This engagement marks a significant step towards unlocking the full potential of Nepal's Pashmina industry, promising not only economic growth and job creation but also a stronger national identity through its unique products. The coming months will be crucial in observing how these commitments translate into concrete policy changes and tangible support for the industry, ultimately benefiting investors and the national economy.

Bagmati Province Pioneers Digital Transformation in Industry Administration

The Bagmati Province Government is embarking on a significant digital transformation initiative, poised to revolutionize industry administration services across all 13 districts. This strategic move aims to streamline bureaucratic processes, enhance transparency, and significantly improve the ease of doing business for entrepreneurs and investors operating within the province. At the heart of this initiative is the expansion of an online system for critical industry-related services. Currently, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce has successfully piloted this digital platform at the Industry and Commerce Office in Makwanpur, offering services such as new industry registration, renewal of existing licenses, and ownership transfers. This initial success has paved the way for a comprehensive rollout, with the Ministry confirming plans to extend these online services to all 13 districts of Bagmati Province by the fiscal year 2083/84. For investors and businesses, this digital leap represents a substantial reduction in red tape and operational friction. The traditional paper-based system often entails multiple visits to government offices, extensive documentation, and prolonged waiting periods. By shifting these processes online, the Bagmati Province Government is not only saving valuable time and resources for businesses but also fostering a more predictable and efficient regulatory environment. This enhanced efficiency is a critical factor in attracting both domestic and foreign investment, as it signals a proactive government committed to supporting industrial growth and development. To ensure a smooth and effective transition, the Ministry has already designated Industry and Commerce Offices in Chitwan, Kavrepalanchok, Ramechhap, and Sindhuli as 'model offices.' These offices are expected to serve as benchmarks for best practices, demonstrating the efficacy of the digital system and providing a blueprint for other districts. Furthermore, a dedicated budget has been allocated with the ambitious goal of developing all 13 district offices into model offices during the upcoming fiscal year. This systematic approach underscores the province's commitment to a high standard of service delivery and operational excellence. The Ministry has also meticulously prepared standards for managing these model offices, ensuring uniformity and quality across the board. The economic implications of this digital transformation are far-reaching. A more accessible and efficient administrative framework can stimulate entrepreneurship, encourage the formalization of businesses, and ultimately contribute to job creation and economic prosperity within Bagmati Province. The latest figures from the end of Ashadh in fiscal year 2082/83 highlight the existing industrial base, with approximately 4,956 industries and 2,550 commercial firms already registered under the ministry in Bagmati Province. The digital initiative is expected to accelerate these numbers, making it easier for new ventures to emerge and existing ones to expand. Beyond digital services, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce also maintains a vigilant stance on market integrity. Regular and surprise market inspections are being conducted to curb illicit practices such as black marketing and artificial shortages. This dual approach – fostering ease of business through digitization while simultaneously ensuring fair market practices – creates a robust and trustworthy environment for economic activity. In conclusion, Bagmati Province's move towards fully digital industry administration services is a forward-thinking step that aligns with global trends in e-governance. It promises to unlock significant efficiencies, enhance transparency, and create a more attractive investment climate. This initiative is not merely about technology; it is about building a modern, responsive, and business-friendly ecosystem that will drive sustainable economic growth and development across the province for years to come.

Nepal Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Online Betting, NTA Blocks Over 223,000 Platforms

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has significantly escalated its efforts to combat illegal online betting and associated financial scams, announcing the blocking of over 223,000 websites and applications. This decisive action underscores the government's commitment to enhancing digital security and financial integrity within the nation, a priority highlighted in its recent governance reform agenda. The initiative stems directly from the government's comprehensive 100-point agenda for governance reform, unveiled on March 27. Specifically, point 42 of this agenda mandated the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to swiftly shut down all betting applications and related websites within a stringent 24-hour timeframe. This directive signaled a clear intent to curb the proliferation of platforms facilitating illicit financial activities. While initial efforts successfully blocked existing betting sites, the dynamic nature of the digital landscape meant new platforms continuously emerged under different guises. The NTA's intensified campaign gained particular momentum with the onset of this year's FIFA World Cup, a period historically associated with a surge in online betting activities. Recognizing this heightened risk, the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers placed increased focus on the issue, prompting the NTA to establish a dedicated task force. This specialized unit is charged with the continuous identification and neutralization of such illicit platforms. Om Prakash Mahato, an assistant director and engineer at the NTA and a key member of the task force, elaborated on the operational strategies employed. He explained that the authority has been working in close coordination with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block the URLs associated with these betting websites. The challenge lies in the sheer volume and rapid emergence of new platforms. To address this, authorized institutions and various government agencies are actively involved in identifying illegal betting and financial websites, which are then systematically blocked through collaborative efforts with ISPs. Despite these robust measures, the NTA acknowledges the persistent challenge posed by the continuous emergence of new websites. As soon as one platform is blocked, another often appears, necessitating an ongoing, proactive monitoring approach. To enhance its capabilities, the NTA is leveraging advanced threat intelligence tools, which enable more efficient identification and tracking of newly emerging illegal websites. A dedicated team has been specifically assigned to operate these tools and ensure prompt action against detected platforms. Beyond technical interventions, the NTA is also engaging the public in its fight against online illicit activities. The authority has established an official reporting channel at github.com/NTA-OPM, encouraging citizens to report any information regarding illegal websites. This crowdsourced intelligence is crucial for updating the NTA's database and facilitating timely reviews and actions. For investors, this crackdown, while not directly impacting stock market performance, signals a broader commitment by the Nepali government to establish a more regulated and secure digital environment. Such regulatory vigilance can contribute to greater financial stability and reduce the risks associated with illicit financial flows, which are critical for fostering a transparent and trustworthy economic ecosystem. It also highlights the government's proactive stance on digital governance, an increasingly important factor in the rapidly evolving global digital economy. The sustained effort to combat online financial crimes underscores Nepal's dedication to protecting its citizens and maintaining the integrity of its financial systems, indirectly bolstering confidence in the nation's regulatory framework. This commitment to digital security and financial integrity is a positive indicator for long-term economic development and investor confidence, ensuring a more predictable and secure operational landscape for legitimate businesses.

TVS Arbiter: A Strategic Entry into Nepal's Evolving Electric Scooter Market

Jagdamba Motors, the authorized distributor of TVS in Nepal, has officially launched the new TVS Arbiter electric scooter, marking a significant expansion in the country's rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) market. Following the successful introduction of the TVS iQube, the Arbiter is strategically positioned to cater primarily to daily urban commuters and practical-minded users, offering a blend of affordability, utility, and robust performance tailored for Nepali conditions. The design philosophy of the TVS Arbiter emphasizes practicality over ostentation. Its 'Next-Gen Boxy' aesthetic presents a modern yet understated look, appealing to a broad demographic. A key highlight is its ergonomic design, featuring an 845mm long seat and a 290mm wide footboard, ensuring ample space and comfort for both the rider and pillion. Furthermore, the scooter boasts a capacious 34-liter under-seat storage, which is among the best in its segment, capable of accommodating two half-face helmets or a substantial amount of daily essentials, making it highly suitable for family use and grocery runs. One of the Arbiter's most compelling advantages, particularly for the Nepali terrain, is its ride quality and adaptability to local road conditions. Unlike many EV scooters that typically feature smaller 10 or 12-inch wheels, the Arbiter comes equipped with a 14-inch front wheel. This larger wheel size significantly enhances ride stability and comfort, especially when navigating potholes, rough patches, and speed bumps that are common on Nepali roads. Coupled with a generous 169mm ground clearance, the risk of scraping the undercarriage is substantially reduced, providing riders with greater confidence and a smoother journey. In terms of performance, the TVS Arbiter is powered by a 3.1 kWh lithium-ion battery paired with a 2.5 kW hub motor. While the company claims an IDC (Indian Driving Cycle) range of up to 158 kilometers, real-world testing in Kathmandu's challenging traffic, congestion, and varied topography suggests a practical range of 110 to 130 kilometers. The scooter achieves a top speed of 68 kilometers per hour, which is more than adequate for urban commuting. However, riders seeking high-speed performance on ring roads or highways might find it slightly underpowered. TVS has integrated several premium technology and safety features into the Arbiter. These include Hill Hold Assist, a particularly useful feature for navigating steep inclines and congested uphill traffic in cities like Kathmandu, preventing the scooter from rolling backward. Reverse Assist and Cruise Control further enhance convenience, aiding in parking maneuvers and providing a relaxed riding experience on open roads. The scooter also features the TVS SmartX Connect app, accessible via a 5.5-inch console, offering turn-by-turn navigation, phone call and SMS alerts, anti-theft functionalities, and a crucial 'Crash & Fall Alert' system that sends emergency messages in case of an accident. From an investor's perspective, the TVS Arbiter represents a strategic move by Jagdamba Motors to capture a significant share of the burgeoning practical EV segment. Its strengths lie in superior ride stability, ample storage, smart safety features, and the robust service and spare parts network established by TVS and Jagdamba across Nepal. While its limited top speed, reliance on drum brakes, and approximately four-hour charging time (from a standard home charger) might be perceived as minor drawbacks, these are largely offset by its overall value proposition. The Arbiter is not designed for adrenaline-seeking youth but rather for families, daily commuters, and individuals seeking a reliable, robust, and 'value for money' electric scooter for the challenging Nepali environment. This strategic positioning, combined with TVS's trusted brand value, makes the Arbiter a strong contender to accelerate EV adoption among a broader demographic, influencing the future trajectory of the two-wheeler market and contributing to the broader economic shift towards sustainable transportation in Nepal.

NEPSE Index and Transaction Volume Surge on Final Trading Day

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) concluded the week on a high note, with both the benchmark index and overall transaction volume witnessing a significant uptick on the final trading day. This positive momentum, which began earlier in the week, continued to build, signaling renewed investor confidence and increased market activity. On Friday, the NEPSE index advanced by a notable 7.90 points, closing at 2734.63. This upward movement was mirrored across other key market indicators, with the Sensitive Index, which tracks large-cap companies, rising by 2.16 points. Similarly, the Float Index and Sensitive Float Index, representing actively traded shares and large-cap actively traded shares respectively, also saw modest gains of 0.82 points and 0.80 points. This broad-based increase suggests a healthy market sentiment, extending beyond just a few select stocks. A particularly encouraging aspect of Friday's trading session was the substantial surge in transaction volume. The market recorded an impressive turnover of NPR 6.26 billion, a significant jump from the NPR 4.69 billion observed on Thursday. This robust increase in liquidity indicates a heightened level of investor participation and a willingness to engage in buying and selling activities. A total of 13.76 million shares from 353 different stocks changed hands across 70,158 transactions, underscoring the depth and breadth of market engagement. Among the day's top performers, Everest Color Limited once again captured attention, hitting a positive circuit level. Its share price soared by NPR 84.90, closing at NPR 651.10, reflecting strong investor interest and potentially positive company-specific news or market speculation. Atmanirbhar Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha also saw a remarkable gain, with its share price appreciating by 14.5%. Sagarmatha Jalvidyut Company followed suit, registering an increase of nearly 7%. These significant gains highlight pockets of strong performance within the market, often driven by sector-specific trends or individual company fundamentals. Conversely, the 10% Sanima Bank Limited Debenture experienced the sharpest decline, falling by 8.92%. While individual debentures can be volatile, this particular drop might warrant closer scrutiny from investors holding similar fixed-income instruments. In terms of trading activity, Ridi Power Company emerged as the leader in transaction volume, with shares worth an impressive NPR 309.3 million being traded. This high volume often indicates strong investor interest and liquidity in the stock. NRN Infrastructure & Development was another prominent player, recording transactions valued at approximately NPR 275 million, while Kumari Bank also saw substantial activity, with its transaction volume exceeding NPR 255 million. These companies often serve as bellwethers for market sentiment due to their high liquidity and investor engagement. A closer look at the sectoral performance reveals a mixed but generally positive picture. Out of the 13 sub-indices, seven concluded the day in positive territory, while six experienced declines. The Banking sub-index led the gains, rising by a robust 1.17%. This strong performance in the banking sector, often considered a cornerstone of the NEPSE, can have a significant positive impact on overall market sentiment. Other sectors that saw modest increases included Development Bank, Hotel & Tourism, Investment, Life Insurance, Microfinance, and Non-Life Insurance. This broad-based growth across several key sectors suggests a healthy underlying market. However, the Mutual Fund sub-index recorded the largest decline, dropping by 2.08%, which could be attributed to profit-booking or a shift in investor preference towards direct equity investments. The overall market performance on Friday, characterized by both an increase in the NEPSE index and a substantial rise in transaction volume, paints a positive outlook for the coming trading days. Investors will be keenly watching to see if this momentum can be sustained, particularly as the market navigates various economic indicators and corporate earnings reports. The increased liquidity and broad participation are encouraging signs for the health and vibrancy of the Nepali stock market.

NEPSE Sees Pre-Open Dip: Index Falls by Nearly 7 Points Ahead of Main Trading

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) commenced the final trading day of the week with a notable decline in its pre-open session. The benchmark index, which serves as a crucial indicator for market sentiment, shed nearly 7 points, signaling a cautious start for investors. Specifically, the NEPSE index closed the pre-open session down by 6.97 points, settling at 2719.74. This follows a significant drop of 14.17 points on the previous trading day, Thursday, when the index closed at 2726.72. The continuous downward movement in the pre-open session suggests a prevailing bearish sentiment among market participants, extending the previous day's losses. Adding to this, the Sensitive Index, which tracks the performance of 'A' class companies, also registered a decline of 2.05 points during the same period. The pre-open session, a critical phase before the main trading hours, allows for price discovery and helps mitigate volatility at market open. It provides an early glimpse into the day's potential market direction. During Friday's pre-open, a total of 10,899 units of shares were traded across 67 different stocks in 141 transactions, accumulating a turnover of NPR 8,686,402.80. This activity, while relatively small compared to the full trading day, offers valuable insights into initial investor appetite. An analysis of the individual stock performance within this session reveals a clear imbalance. Out of the 67 stocks traded, only 19 managed to see an increase in their share prices, indicating limited buying interest. In stark contrast, 43 stocks experienced a decline, underscoring the broad-based selling pressure. The remaining 5 stocks maintained their previous closing prices, showing no change in value. This distribution of gainers and losers further solidifies the perception of a negative start to the trading day. For investors, the pre-open session's outcome is a vital early signal. A dip like this often suggests that the main trading session might also open lower or face downward pressure. While the pre-open session's movements do not definitively dictate the entire day's trend, they are indicative of initial market sentiment and can influence trading strategies. Factors such as prevailing interest rates, liquidity in the banking system, corporate earnings reports, and broader economic indicators often contribute to these early market movements. Investors are advised to monitor the full trading day closely to understand the complete market dynamics and make informed decisions, as the initial pre-open dip could either stabilize or intensify as the day progresses. This early indicator serves as a crucial piece of the puzzle for those navigating the NEPSE market, demanding careful observation and strategic planning for the session ahead.

RSDC Laghubitta: A Decade of Wholesale Microfinance Performance and Future Outlook

RSDC Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Ltd. (RSDC), a pioneering national-level "D" class financial institution, has completed twelve years of operations, establishing itself as Nepal's third microfinance institution and notably, the first and only wholesale microfinance institution with its registered office outside the Kathmandu Valley. Operating from Butwal since September 2013, RSDC plays a crucial role as a financial intermediary, borrowing funds from larger Bank and Financial Institutions (BFIs) and lending them to retail microfinance institutions. This comprehensive review delves into RSDC's financial journey from Q4 2071/72 to Q4 2082/83, offering investors detailed insights into its balance sheet, profit and loss dynamics, and key performance indicators. **Balance Sheet Dynamics: Growth and Shifting Composition** RSDC has demonstrated consistent asset growth over the review period. Total assets surged from Rs. 54.62 crore in Q4 2071/72 to an impressive Rs. 5.66 billion by Q4 2082/83, reflecting a median annual growth rate of 23.41%. This expansion underscores the institution's increasing scale and reach within the microfinance sector. The core business of lending to microfinance institutions and cooperatives saw substantial growth, with loans and advances expanding from Rs. 50.71 crore to Rs. 4.24 billion, at a median annual growth rate of 23.29%. However, a notable trend emerged: the lending portfolio peaked at Rs. 6.73 billion in Q4 2079/80 and has since experienced a declining trajectory. This shift warrants investor attention, as it could signal changes in market demand, competitive landscape, or internal lending strategies. Concurrently, the proportion of cash and cash equivalents within total assets has significantly increased, rising from 6% in Q4 2071/72 to 20.87% by Q4 2082/83. While maintaining adequate liquidity is crucial, holding excessive cash above regulatory requirements can indicate inefficient capital deployment, especially if lending opportunities are contracting. On the liabilities front, RSDC's total liabilities (excluding equity) expanded nine-fold, from Rs. 47.67 crore to Rs. 4.31 billion. Borrowings remain the cornerstone of its funding, accounting for nearly 100% of total liabilities in Q4 2071/72 and remaining at 98% by Q4 2082/83. This high reliance on borrowings, while typical for a wholesale microfinance institution, highlights the importance of diversifying funding sources to mitigate interest rate risks and enhance financial stability. Total equity saw a median annual growth rate of 10.78%, driven by a 9.00% growth in share capital and a more robust 13.22% growth in reserves. This steady accumulation of equity provides a buffer against potential losses and supports future expansion. **Profitability and Expense Management: Navigating Market Shifts** Interest income, RSDC's primary revenue stream, peaked at Rs. 94.86 crore in Q4 2079/80 before experiencing a sharp decline to Rs. 41.47 crore by Q4 2082/83. This downturn reflects broader market trends, including a declining interest rate environment and the contraction in the lending portfolio. Interestingly, RSDC managed to reduce its funding costs (interest expense) more rapidly than its lending yields. As a result, the net interest margin did not decline in the same proportion, which helped to somewhat cushion profitability despite the overall revenue decline. This agility in cost management is a positive sign for investors. While RSDC recorded its highest net profit of Rs. 14.66 crore in Q4 2070/81, its net profit has generally fluctuated between Rs. 10 crore and Rs. 15 crore over the last five years, indicating a period of relative stability in core profitability. Interest expense remains the largest cost component, mirroring the trends in borrowings and market interest rates. A critical area for investor scrutiny is staff costs, which increased sharply by 1.73 times from FY 2077/78 to FY 2078/79. While business growth might have justified this at the time, the subsequent decline in business volume alongside increasing staff costs could impact efficiency and profitability if not managed effectively. Other operating expenses remained relatively low throughout the review period. **Key Performance Indicators: A Deeper Dive** RSDC's Earnings Per Share (EPS), after peaking at Rs. 25.04 in Q4 2072/73, settled into a relatively stable range of Rs. 10-15 from Q4 2074/75 onwards, reaching Rs. 14.18 in Q4 2082/83. This stability, while not indicative of aggressive growth, suggests a consistent earnings base. Return on Equity (RoE) broadly tracked EPS, hovering around 10% in most years, with dips to 7.68% and 7.92% in Q4 2074/75 and Q4 2081/82, respectively, due to weaker profitability. Return on Assets (RoA), a measure of asset utilization efficiency, showed a remarkable rebound, reaching its highest level of 2.44% in Q4 2082/83, up from a low of 1.25% in Q4 2081/82. This significant improvement in RoA signals enhanced operational efficiency in the most recent fiscal year. The Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratio, after an exceptional peak of 172.32 times in Q4 2073/74 driven by high market prices, has since stabilized, standing at 48.61 times in Q4 2082/83. Similarly, the Price-to-Book (P/B) ratio, which also peaked in Q4 2073/74, has consistently remained below 10 times, with a median of 4.70 times over the past 12 years. This suggests that the market has generally valued RSDC's shares at a premium to its book value, indicating investor confidence in its net worth per share, which maintained a median of Rs. 125.22. **Financial Health and Dividend Consistency** RSDC has consistently maintained a healthy Capital Fund to Risk-Weighted Assets Ratio (CAR), underscoring its strong capital position. The Credit-to-Deposit (CD) ratio, which has remained above 100% since Q4 2078/79 (except for 2081/82), is characteristic of a wholesale microfinance institution that relies on institutional borrowings rather than retail deposits. However, a concerning trend is the increasing Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio, which rose to 3.92% in Q4 2082/83. This increase, primarily due to repayment challenges faced by some retail microfinance institutions, demands close monitoring as it directly impacts asset quality and profitability. RSDC has a history of moderate but consistent dividend distribution, with a median annual total dividend of 10.76% over the review period. The highest dividend declared was 16.00% in FY 2075/76. This consistent payout, even if moderate, can be attractive to income-focused investors. **Conclusion for Investors** RSDC Laghubitta's twelve-year journey reveals a robust institution with consistent asset growth and a unique wholesale microfinance model. While it has demonstrated resilience in managing interest rate fluctuations and maintaining capital adequacy, investors should closely watch the declining lending portfolio, the rising NPL ratio, and the efficiency of staff cost management. The recent rebound in RoA in Q4 2082/83 is a positive indicator of improved operational efficiency. As RSDC navigates the evolving microfinance landscape, its ability to diversify funding, manage asset quality, and optimize operational costs will be key determinants of its future performance and shareholder value.

Nepal's Automobile Market Shifts Gears: EV Imports Slow, Fuel Vehicles Regain Traction Amid Policy Volatility

Nepal's automobile sector is currently navigating a complex and dynamic landscape, marked by significant shifts in import patterns over the past year. Despite the government's pronounced policy push towards electric vehicles (EVs) – aimed at fostering environmental sustainability and mitigating the burgeoning trade deficit – recent data from the Customs Department paints a contrasting picture. The market has witnessed a notable deceleration in the import of four-wheeler EVs, while surprisingly, internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles are experiencing a resurgence in demand. In the last fiscal year, Nepal's total vehicle imports reached a staggering NPR 103.64 billion. This substantial figure underscores the nation's profound reliance on the transportation sector and highlights a persistent consumerist trend within the Nepali economy. However, the most striking development has been the approximately 12% decline in four-wheeler EV imports. Compared to the previous fiscal year's 17,381 units, only 15,171 four-wheeler EVs entered the Nepali market last year. Automobile industry experts attribute this downturn primarily to policy instability. Frequent adjustments in tax rates on electric vehicles introduced through successive budgets, coupled with the sluggish expansion of public charging infrastructure, have collectively eroded consumer confidence. While the government did manage to collect a significant NPR 21.61 billion in customs revenue from EV imports worth NPR 34.24 billion, signaling EVs' growing role as a revenue source, this has not been enough to sustain the initial momentum. Interestingly, while the four-wheeler EV segment faces headwinds, the two-wheeler market tells a different story. Amidst the global and local buzz surrounding EVs, the import of fuel-powered bikes and scooters surged by an astonishing 50,000 units. Over 250,000 fuel-powered two-wheelers were imported last year, resulting in an outflow of NPR 33.07 billion from the national treasury. Although electric two-wheeler imports also doubled from 14,000 to 27,000 units year-on-year, their market share remains comparatively negligible against their fuel-powered counterparts. This trend suggests that a widespread, immediate displacement of petrol-powered vehicles on Nepali roads is not yet on the horizon. The government's revenue collection from vehicle imports stood at NPR 72.83 billion last year, a welcome boost to the state coffers. However, this positive fiscal outcome is overshadowed by the outflow of over NPR 100 billion in foreign currency, exerting considerable pressure on Nepal's balance of payments. Economists are increasingly concerned that while the rise in imports of commercial vehicles (an increase of 12,000 units) and passenger cars might indicate a pick-up in market economic activity, this growth appears to be disproportionately concentrated in consumption and luxury goods rather than contributing to the productive sectors of the economy. The increase in commercial vehicle imports, however, does offer a glimmer of hope, suggesting a potential revitalization in the construction and logistics sectors. Similarly, the growth in three-wheeler imports points to expanding self-employment opportunities, particularly in smaller urban centers and the Terai region. The overarching analysis of these statistics reveals that Nepal's automotive market remains highly susceptible to policy inconsistencies. Factors such as fluctuating bank interest rates, unpredictable customs duties, and evolving market psychology have played crucial roles in shaping the current import trends. The data unequivocally demonstrates that Nepal's journey towards 'green mobility' is proving far more challenging than initially anticipated. This NPR 103 billion import landscape underscores that Nepal's transportation sector is in a critical transitional phase. While the global automotive industry is increasingly embracing the EV revolution, the Nepali market continues to exhibit a strong preference for fuel-powered vehicles. Experts argue that unless the government adopts a more holistic approach – viewing vehicles not merely as a source of tax revenue but as integral components of a sustainable transportation system requiring robust infrastructure development – the nation's trade deficit and reliance on fossil fuels are unlikely to abate. The immediate challenge for policymakers and industry stakeholders lies in strategizing how to reinvigorate the decelerating EV market and effectively manage the escalating imports of fuel-based vehicles. A coherent, long-term policy framework, coupled with consistent implementation and investment in supporting infrastructure, will be paramount to steering Nepal towards a truly sustainable and economically viable transportation future.

US Unleashes Sweeping 'Forced Labor' Tariffs on 60 Nations, Igniting Global Trade War Fears

The United States has dramatically escalated its trade offensive, announcing a new wave of tariffs on imports from 60 of its major trading partners. This aggressive move, spearheaded by President Donald Trump, cites alleged failures by these nations to curb "forced labor" practices within their supply chains. The decision, which took effect on Friday, directly impacts economic giants such as the United Kingdom, China, India, Japan, Canada, and the entire European Union, sending ripples of concern across global markets. These new tariffs, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, replace a temporary 10% levy that recently expired, signaling a more permanent and entrenched shift in U.S. trade policy. The Trump administration has introduced a two-tiered system designed to incentivize compliance. According to U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer, countries that demonstrate effective measures and a clear commitment to preventing the import of goods produced by forced labor will face a 10% tariff. Conversely, nations that fail to make such commitments or show weakness in their implementation efforts will be subjected to the higher 12.5% duty. Greer emphasized the humanitarian and economic rationale behind this policy, stating in a press release, "Today's action will help protect the interests of workers worldwide and correct human rights abuses and distorted trade practices." The administration has invoked Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act, a powerful tool that allows the U.S. to impose tariffs or other trade restrictions on countries that engage in unfair trade practices. This particular application of Section 301, linking trade directly to human rights and labor standards, marks a significant expansion of its traditional use. The unilateral nature of this decision has predictably ignited a firestorm of international condemnation. Major trading partners have voiced strong objections, accusing the U.S. of protectionism under the guise of human rights. Brazil, for instance, has vehemently denounced the tariffs as "unjust" and "arbitrary," alleging that the U.S. is weaponizing sensitive issues like workers' rights to mask its own protectionist agenda. Brazil has even threatened retaliatory measures under its "Reciprocity Law," signaling a potential escalation of trade disputes. Similarly, Japan has expressed "deep regret" over the U.S. decision, asserting that its trade practices are fully compliant with international rules. Australia's Trade Minister, Don Farrell, labeled the tariffs "completely unfair" and pledged to exert pressure for their removal. China, a frequent target of U.S. trade actions, has outright rejected the forced labor allegations, dismissing them as politically motivated manipulation. This denial comes despite persistent claims from international human rights organizations, particularly concerning the alleged forced labor of Muslim minorities in China's Xinjiang region, which have fueled much of the U.S. administration's rhetoric. This latest move by the Trump administration also comes with a notable legal backdrop. Many of President Trump's previous global tariffs were struck down as "illegal" by the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled that they exceeded the President's emergency powers. This led to billions of dollars in refunds and a strategic shift in the administration's approach. Consequently, Trump has been actively seeking alternative legal justifications, such as "forced labor" and "human rights," to underpin his trade policies and avoid similar legal setbacks. This new framework appears to be an attempt to establish a more robust legal foundation for his protectionist agenda. Economists and market analysts are already warning of the potential repercussions. Experts like Wendy Cutler of the Asia Society Policy Institute predict that these tariffs will inevitably lead to higher prices for goods in the American market, increasing costs for both businesses and consumers. Furthermore, the policy is expected to compel many affected countries to re-evaluate their reliance on the U.S. market, potentially accelerating a diversification of global supply chains and fostering new trade partnerships. This could lead to a fragmentation of the global economy, making international trade more complex and costly. Adding to the uncertainty, the Trump administration is reportedly investigating the production capacities of 16 other countries, suggesting that further tariffs could be imposed in the near future. This ongoing scrutiny and the threat of expanding trade barriers are creating significant turbulence in global supply chains and widening the economic chasm between the U.S. and the rest of the world. For investors, this environment necessitates careful consideration of exposure to international trade, potential supply chain disruptions, and the broader geopolitical risks associated with an increasingly protectionist global landscape. The long-term implications for global economic stability and growth remain a critical concern.

Nepal's DMLI Intensifies Anti-Money Laundering Efforts, Files Seven Major Cases Seeking Rs 118 Billion Recovery

The Department of Money Laundering Investigation (DMLI) in Nepal has significantly ramped up its efforts against illicit financial activities, announcing the filing of seven major money laundering cases during the fiscal year 2082/83 BS. This decisive action underscores the government's commitment to combating financial crime and upholding the integrity of the nation's financial system. Details released by the DMLI on Thursday reveal the extensive scope of these investigations, with a staggering 121 individuals identified as defendants across the seven cases. More critically, the Department is seeking the recovery of an colossal sum of Rs 118 billion, an amount that highlights the severe economic impact of such illegal operations on the Nepali economy. This figure represents a substantial portion of the national budget and signifies the scale of wealth illicitly acquired and laundered within the country. Money laundering poses a grave threat to any nation's financial stability, economic growth, and international reputation. For Nepal, which has been under increased scrutiny regarding its anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing (CTF) frameworks, these proactive measures by the DMLI are particularly crucial. The filing of these high-profile cases sends a strong message that authorities are serious about enforcing financial regulations and holding perpetrators accountable, which could positively influence international assessments, such as those conducted by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). A robust AML regime is vital for attracting foreign investment and maintaining correspondent banking relationships, both of which are essential for Nepal's economic development. The DMLI operates through a well-structured framework designed to tackle complex financial crimes. Its operational backbone includes four dedicated investigation sections, supported by a specialized Law and Consulting Unit, an Administration and Planning Section, an Investigation Coordination Section, and a Police Section. This multi-faceted approach allows the Department to conduct thorough investigations, gather evidence, and build strong cases for prosecution, ensuring that justice is served and illicit gains are recovered. The coordination between these units is paramount in navigating the intricate web of financial transactions often associated with money laundering. For investors, these developments are a double-edged sword. On one hand, the aggressive pursuit of money launderers enhances transparency and reduces systemic risks within the financial sector, fostering a more secure and predictable investment environment. A cleaner financial system is inherently more attractive to both domestic and international investors, as it minimizes the risks of illicit funds distorting market dynamics or being inadvertently linked to legitimate businesses. On the other hand, the sheer volume of funds involved in these cases underscores the persistent challenges Nepal faces in eradicating financial crime, reminding investors of the importance of due diligence and understanding the regulatory landscape. The recovery of Rs 118 billion, if successful, would represent a significant boost to state coffers and could be redirected towards public welfare projects or economic development initiatives. Beyond the monetary recovery, the successful prosecution of these cases will serve as a powerful deterrent, discouraging future attempts at money laundering and strengthening public trust in the rule of law. As Nepal continues its journey towards economic prosperity, the DMLI's unwavering commitment to combating financial crime remains a cornerstone of its efforts to build a resilient, transparent, and trustworthy financial ecosystem. This ongoing vigilance is critical for safeguarding the nation's economic future and ensuring sustainable growth.

Miteree Development Bank Posts Impressive Q4 Results, Eyes Significant Dividend Payouts

Miteree Development Bank Limited, a prominent financial institution headquartered in Eastern Nepal, has recently unveiled its unaudited financial statements for the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year. The report highlights a commendable improvement across its key financial indicators, signaling a period of robust growth and enhanced profitability. This positive performance is likely to instill confidence among its shareholders and potential investors, especially given the bank's strong dividend-paying capacity. For the fiscal year ending in the fourth quarter, Miteree Development Bank recorded a net profit of NPR 141.21 million. This represents a significant increase of 8.98% compared to the NPR 129.5 million reported during the same period in the previous fiscal year. The growth in net profit is primarily attributed to a substantial improvement in the bank's net interest income, a crucial metric reflecting the core earning power of a financial institution. The bank's net interest income surged by an impressive 50.30%, reaching NPR 307.4 million from NPR 204.5 million in the prior fiscal year. This remarkable growth was largely driven by a strategic reduction in interest expenses, indicating efficient fund management and a favorable interest rate environment for the bank. Concurrently, the operating profit also saw a healthy rise, climbing from NPR 185.7 million to NPR 201.7 million, further underscoring the bank's operational efficiency and effective cost control measures. Perhaps one of the most anticipated figures for investors is the distributable profit. As of the end of Ashar (mid-July), Miteree Development Bank reported a distributable profit of NPR 154.86 million. With a paid-up capital of NPR 1.2171 billion, this translates into a potential dividend distribution capacity of up to 12.73% for its shareholders. This strong capacity positions the bank favorably in the market, making it an attractive option for income-focused investors seeking consistent returns. Beyond profitability, the bank demonstrated solid growth in its core banking operations. Customer deposits witnessed a substantial increase, growing from NPR 6.50 billion to NPR 8.85 billion, reflecting growing public trust and effective deposit mobilization strategies. Similarly, the bank's loan and advances portfolio expanded to NPR 6.69 billion, indicating a healthy expansion in its lending activities while maintaining prudent risk management. A standout achievement for Miteree Development Bank is its exceptional performance in controlling non-performing loans (NPLs). The NPL ratio further declined from 0.28% in the previous fiscal year to an impressive 0.26%. This extremely low NPL ratio is a testament to the bank's stringent credit assessment processes and robust recovery mechanisms, placing it among the safest and most well-managed financial institutions in the sector. A low NPL is a critical indicator of asset quality and financial stability, reassuring investors about the health of the bank's loan book. The positive financial results also translated into improved per-share metrics. The Earnings Per Share (EPS) increased from NPR 10.65 to NPR 11.60, reflecting higher earnings attributable to each share. As of Ashar end, the Net Worth Per Share stood at NPR 143.20, while the Capital Adequacy Ratio remained robust at 25.75%, well above regulatory requirements, indicating a strong capital base to absorb potential losses and support future growth. Furthermore, the bank successfully reduced its Cost of Fund from 5.12% to 4.22% and its Base Rate to 5.98%, which can lead to more competitive lending rates and improved interest margins in the future. In conclusion, Miteree Development Bank's Q4 financial report paints a picture of a well-managed and growing institution. The significant increase in net profit, strong dividend capacity, impressive NPL control, and healthy growth in deposits and loans collectively underscore the bank's solid financial health and promising outlook. These results are likely to bolster investor confidence and position Miteree Development Bank as a compelling investment opportunity within Nepal's dynamic financial sector.

Middle East Tensions Ignite Global Oil Prices: Brent Crude Surges Past $100 for First Time Since May

The global energy market is once again gripped by volatility as escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, coupled with renewed supply chain disruptions, have sent crude oil prices soaring. For the first time since May, the international benchmark, Brent Crude, has breached the critical psychological barrier of $100 per barrel, signaling a significant shift in the economic landscape and raising alarms for investors worldwide. This sharp increase, which saw oil prices jump over 6% in a single day, is primarily attributed to intensified military actions by the United States against Iran. The already fragile situation has been further exacerbated by a series of attacks on oil tankers in the Red Sea by Yemen's Houthi rebels. These attacks pose a direct threat to Saudi Arabia's crucial export routes, igniting fears of a broader energy crisis and potential supply shortages in an already tight market. The Red Sea is a vital maritime artery for global trade, and any sustained disruption there has immediate and far-reaching consequences for energy flows, impacting everything from shipping costs to manufacturing inputs. The current surge follows the collapse of a temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran, which had previously offered a brief respite and a slight dip in oil prices. However, hopes for de-escalation were dashed when US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that Iran was not prepared for a diplomatic resolution. This breakdown in negotiations has pushed tensions to a boiling point, raising serious concerns about potential disruptions in strategic choke points like the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow waterway, through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply passes, remains a critical flashpoint, and any obstruction there could trigger an unprecedented global energy shock, sending commodity markets into turmoil. The ripple effects of this instability are not confined to crude oil alone. Natural gas prices have also witnessed a substantial uptick, particularly in Europe. In the UK, for instance, the price per therm of gas has surged from 98 pence in June to an alarming 150 pence, reflecting the broader energy market's sensitivity to geopolitical events and the interconnectedness of global energy supplies. This widespread increase in energy costs is poised to have a profound impact on households and industries alike, squeezing profit margins for businesses and reducing disposable income for consumers. Economists and policymakers are now bracing for a potential resurgence of inflation in major economies, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Both nations had seen some success in taming inflationary pressures, with inflation rates dropping to 2.6% in the UK and 3.5% in the US by June. However, the current energy crisis threatens to reverse these hard-won gains, pushing consumer prices higher across the board. The direct consequence of expensive fuel is an increase in shipping and transportation costs, which inevitably translates into higher prices for essential goods, including food and other consumer staples. In the UK, petrol prices have climbed to £1.56 per liter and diesel to £1.72 per liter, while in the US, the average price of gasoline has surpassed $4 per gallon, impacting daily commutes and logistics for businesses. This renewed inflationary pressure presents a significant dilemma for central banks worldwide. Investment managers, like Jonathan Raymond of Quilter Cheviot, warn that sustained high energy prices will compel central banks to maintain elevated interest rates or even consider further hikes. Such a move would undoubtedly place additional strain on borrowers, particularly those with mortgages and other forms of debt, potentially stifling economic growth and increasing the risk of recession. The Bank of England has kept its interest rates steady at 3.75%, while the newly appointed US Federal Reserve Chairman, Kevin Warsh, has reiterated the central bank's unwavering commitment to price stability. Despite persistent calls from figures like US President Donald Trump for interest rate cuts, the prevailing inflationary environment makes it highly improbable that central banks will ease monetary policy anytime soon. The prolonged nature of the Middle East conflict, coupled with its direct impact on global energy markets, raises the specter of a global economic downturn and a fresh wave of inflation. Experts caution that if the situation continues to deteriorate, the world economy could once again find itself grappling with the twin challenges of recession and soaring living costs, making prudent investment strategies and economic resilience more critical than ever for investors navigating these turbulent waters.
